There's a mirror here. When I downloaded it this afternoon, the mirror was faster than the Gray Matter website. (Still, it's a huge download at 1.6GB!)

Wow, kjos, it took me over five hours to download. You must have caught it at a good time and/or have a much faster internet connection than I do. I got the same time available no matter which mirror I chose, so I finally just downloaded it directly from the website. At least I got to play it. Intriguing! Now I'm ready for the whole game, please.

Of course this is the bad news about downloading games. You better have servers that are faster than dialup ALWAYS. My several attempts to download the demo would be hours. I pass on the game because this is not a serious outfit. My GOG downloads are always at my maximum speed. I really do not the hassle.

I have to say that first impressions it is not really that great. The animations are annoying i mean in the demo you find the rabbit and she picks it up by the ears (how cruel!!) but worse still the animation is so poorly done she isn't even touching the rabbit as it is picked up. And when pouring the water even tho you hear the sound of pouring before shes even got it at such an angle where it would start pouring. Then theirs the water bottle for the cage is just so tacky.
The characters animation on bottom of screen, the faces are sooo fat its not nice to look at at all.
The ambient sound is alright tho and music tho the music drowned out what the women in the intro vid was saying as she rang the buzzer so unless u had subtitles on u wouldn't have known what she said.
About the intro as well, i find it lazy in its animation or lack their of. Things just glided like the bike when its curving and i thought god how [blip] is that how lazy too.
The nice things i can say is the gfx are colourful if a little weird on the models in the scene due to transparency antialising not working in the game (forced to in nvidia panel) which is a shame. The story might be interesting from the bit i played (stopped when i switched to the bloke). I liked the rabbit stuff but animations ruined the immersion for me.
So first impressions, potential but alot of graphical issues to be fixed imo before i even think about buying it.
Edit - Ah forgot to comment on the voice over work. From the little i played to get a first impression, the voices were nice well that of Sam. She sounded ok. The bloke which i heard just a line or two from sounded ok.

Hi Skeeter and everyone. Just wanted to pop in after I read your post about Grey Matter and I have to admit, I feel the same way. I noticed the things you mentioned too but am not ready to give up on the game yet. I think I'll buy it from a fellow Boomer and see what the whole game is like. Hopefully there will be alot of goodness later in the game to over come the flaws. Tracy

I tried to install the demo for this game (twice) but was unable to do so. When trying to start the game I got an error message stating "D3DX9_43.DLL was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."
I did try to reinstall it - even tried to install the Direct-X software (which also failed) but got the same message when trying to start the game.
Anyone else have this problem?
Robert

Skeeter Thank you for making this easier for me because I know I am not the only one that feels the way you do. After the demo I watched entire walkthru videos to give game more of a chance. I have played all of Gabriel Knight, and loved each one ,top of my old time favorites. I loved everything about the game the sense of humor the way we could click and look on objects and get quirky humor back or descriptions. The Chemistry between Gabriel and Grace, bantering back and forth. The way we would choose the dialog until we wore the character out and nothing new is said. Hard to believe the same woman that brought us Gabriel Knight is the same woman that brings us Grey Matter. I waited with eager anticipation for Grey Matter with years of delays. At last I see the real thing and Here is my opinion
I was shocked and dismayed and so disappointed with graphics and storyline. Voices were done exceptionally well. Graphics are outdated even compared to Collectors Edition of IHOG. Where is the suspense? Where is the spooky feeling there was none in my opinion. I did not like the magic trick part, I did not like the riddle parts.
My favorite game was Sins of the father. The voodoo in it was suspenseful and Gabriel Knight had a sense of humour. There is no sense of humour between the characters.
The animation was terrible many times. I can't stand to hear the woman eat as she stands up and never sits down and makes noises while she eats. No woman that I know eats like that. Not even men make that much noise.
I cringed when I saw her pick the rabbit up by the bunny's ears! The bunny looks giant in the cage.
I am sorry but there is so much wrong with this game in my opinion the truth is I found it boring. I Watched the walkthru to see if I was misjudging it, and I don't feel that I am.
13th skull was more exciting in my opinion or Lost Chronicles of Salem, or Redemption Cemetery and these are just Casual games but at least I couldn't stop playing them and bought them because they held my interest.
It would have been great if she would have stayed with Gabriel Knight and kept the same relationship with Grace and used updated Graphics. She was a genius when she wrote the script for those games.
Well Skeeter just to let you know I agree with what you wrote and just had to vent my disappointment. Sad to say I will not be buying this game. The storyline had so much potentiality to be a spooky one. We could have used ghost busting equipment like in the Lost Crown.
Suspense added like people disappearing being murdered by ghost. Black Mirror 2 was a better game and I will buy Black Mirror 3. This had suspense and surprises. Now I am back to having no game I am excited about releasing, something suspenseful and spooky feeling to it with mystery. Not a HOG but adventure game. Thanks for listening to me vent my disappointment and I do hope she goes back to Gabriel Knight with Grace again.
I downloaded with ease, took several hours, but I started it when I left for church and checked it much later after we returned, lunched and I napped. Runs OK. First impressions = graphics are much like the first Gabriel Knight way back when, and I don't feel like they should be 'smoothed out' or changed to a more modern, clearer 'video'. I like the feel of it. I am in the very beginning of April's dream (TLJ - how did SHE get in a JJ game?) and as usual need a nudge what I can do next. Have the branch and stuck it in the ground but how do I divert that water? Anyone doing a w/t for the demo? Thanks Love, Betty Lou

Yes, that sounds like The Longest Journey, not Gray Matter. That's really weird, though because I experienced something similar when I downloaded a demo recently. The Longest Journey opened instead of the demo when I double clicked on it. When I exited and restarted the demo, however, it worked fine. It wasn't Gray Matter, though, it was Murder on the Orient Express. I just tested it out recently, since it's one of those old ones that escaped me and looked interesting. Anyway, I guess TLJ just really wants to be played.
