After downloading Real Myst on my WinXP disc, I get a pop-up saying I need a new codex. Continuing on without it the game played a little jumpy and quickly crashed, requiring an emergency shut down.

I went to GOG community, they suggest downloading the codex from off site. Tried that, wouldn't open or install.

Although I have played Myst several times I would like to really get to look at all those things you can't see in the original.

Any suggestions on how to get this thing to play for me?

All drivers are up to date.

Thanks~

Was it the K-lite Codec pack?

Yes it was.
Then I tried the other suggested one, ffdshow. It installed, but didn't help either.

I guess I'll just have to chalk the cost of Real Myst up to experience and go back to playing the original.

I do wish that GOG would be able to stand by their claim that the games are compatible with WinXP; playable without tweaking.

Thanks~

Did you uninstall the old codec pack before installing the one the game wanted?

Yes, I uninstalled it as well as the game and Restored back to before either were installed.

I've tried all other suggestions made by GOG trouble shooting and the community as well as anything I could think of myself.

I have e-mailed them with no feedback to date.

Since GOG doesn't do returns, I guess this is another purchase down the drain. I probably won't be buying anything from them again.

Thanks~

RealMyst from GOG won't work on my Windows 7 either.

Hopefully they'll eventually come up with a fix.
Is the problem with both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7?

Good question - My 32-bit Win 7 Release Candidate drive which will run for a couple of hours at a time is still operational. I'll check.

I found an interesting thread about this issue here; in particular, see Spinvis' post towards the bottom.

Very interesting, Marian, but holy cow! And, no it didn't work on the 32-bit Win 7 either.

EUREKA! I found this post on the GOG forums and it worked... Thank you to jaelkthompson at the GOG forums for posting it. None of it worked until I changed the video card settings to Direct 3D HAL. The default was T & HAL. Jenny100 or Inland may know what that means - I don't. He said it will work for XP too. A copy and paste from the post:

Go to the Start menu and navigate to the realMyst program file, right click, choose "Properties" and click the tab "Compatibility".
Under Compatibility mode, check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for", and change the drop down menu to "Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
Under Settings, check "Disable visual themes".
Under Privilege Level, check the box "Run this program as an administrator".
Once these settings have been applied, click "Apply" and "OK" to exit.
Then, go back to the Start menu and run the Setup for realMyst, and make sure that the settings are as follows:
*3D Hardware, choose "Direct 3D", and change the drop down menu to the Direct 3D HAL setting for your graphic card

Hopefully that fix will work on other computers.
HAL is Hardware Abstraction Layer, and you can read about it here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_abstraction_layer

Maybe the Direct3D T&L HAL is supposed to look better or something so they make that the default instead of Direct3D HAL (without the T&L).

I found the GOG thread ***here***.
