You’ve most likely picked up a piece of malware. Download Malwarebytes and run a full system scan. It detects most of these pests and eliminates them. Whatever you do, don't purchase any of the recommended products that are advertised (by the malware). Most of these types prompt you to upgrade or purchased another product. It’s just a scam to get your money. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

I could also suggest a good cleaning with the free version of CCleaner. CCleaner

Mome, have you tried doing a system restore back to a point before the first time you had this problem? Might work.

Would it be possible to do a system restore then, instead of letting the computer restart right away, tell it to wait and run your AV (and malwarebytes) first? Maybe I'm off base but if the restart won't happen without your permission, it seems as if the files that had been removed would be in a sort of limbo where one program or another could catch the malware and quarantine it before it could reinstall.
But maybe not. I'm certainly no computer whiz.

Starcom was correct the first time - you may restore right back to an infection. When trying to clean up computers, it is often suggested that System Restore be turned off to avoid reinfection. The best thing to do is to resolve the problem and when the system is clean, create a new restore point.
System Restore is not completed until the computer is totally rebooted.

Mome - One other piece of software you might want to keep in mind. It's called SuperAntiSpyware. Google it - it is excellent.
Some malware on your PC disables task manager etc so you cant shut down the offending spyware - The one you mentioned is very nasty by-the-way.
Anyway - you can download superantispyware free - as an install on your PC or - and this is very neat - onto a USB drive and run the "Portable" version. They do this because some malware won't let you install or run tools that will eliminate the them!! Nasty thing to do !! So running off a USB drive - you don't need to install it and you can run a scan from the USB drive!! This works like a charm. It will at the very least get your PC back to a point you can use it and do further "cleaning"
We do this all day !! :>((

Mome, those 10,00th visitor popups are real live BAD things for the most part. Good for you... Keep resisting those popups and you will be much safer on-line!

Mome Whenever you go to a site - any site - and you get a pop-up any pop-up - just remember - no such thing as FREE. They already put a "cookie" on your PC ( Google cookies - usually harmless but they do keep track of you ). If you really want to stay on that site - ok - just be very careful what displays on your screen - read carefully - they can get tricky. If you are computer savvy - try downloading and using the Firefox Browser instead of Internet Explorer - it's free and a bit safer to use. It has a bit more "Phishing" and spyware protection built in. Oh - look up "phishing" that will get you going !!
