It has been recommended to me that I might like this game - an Adventure/Horror game for the PC. I have read the review (Googled the game) online and am asking for opinions here from anyone who has played the game - did you like it? - how did it compare to (older) games like Shivers and Temujin (2 of my favorites way back then)? Thanks - I found it online for under $10 but don't want to buy it if I am not going to like it and I understand we each have our own likes/dislikes but I value your opinions. Thanks Love, Betty Lou

Very good game, it has a lot of torture related scenes though, then if you decide to play it be aware of this.

i am playing this but only maybe once a week as I find it very intense but at the same time a bit boring conversely. It is not my usual type of game but I have been playing 'darkside' type games at the moment as I have played all the classic type of adventures out there at present so am a bit desperate! Previously I played jekyl and hyde which I do recommend if you don't mind action and timed elements games as the puzzles were really good.

Betty Lou, I'm playing Amnesia now. It's freaky and so scary that I can only play for about an hour or so at a time. I need to mentally prepare myself to start up the game every time because it's just about the most frightening game I've ever played. There are a few parts that I've seen so far that definitely are not for the squeamish. If you've played Penumbra or Black Plague then you have an idea of the physics engine used in the game. There's no combat but there is some stealth needed sometimes. The puzzles so far (I'm only newly arrived in the jail area) are well integrated into the storyline. The voice acting is very nicely done and the music is outstanding. As are the ambient sound effects. I think that some of the tenseness of the game environment has a lot to do with the sounds heard in the distance. Or right behind you. The story itself almost seems to be a story inside a story. If that makes sense. I am loving this game. I'd have to say that as far as scariness goes, Amnesia is more on the level of Shivers but the game itself is like nothing I've ever played. Hope this helps you decide whether to play it. Best, Leigh-Anne

And also Betty Lou, it is not a point and click adventure game. I have to say it is definitely the scariest game I have ever played! And the scariness is all about the atmosphere rather than any overt "monster manifestations." Although there are some very scary creepy things in the game. I found I absolutely could not play it late at night and only played during the day. Once I still screamed out loud when I opened up a gate in some underground tunnels and turned around to find one of them right on top of me! Thank heavens, I was home alone...
And also, what mcc said about the torture aspect. But I loved this game...

Actually , I found the game boring, quite gruesome but boring. The game has what I consider to be a fatal flaw. As you spend time in the dark, and it mostly is dark, you lose sanity: crystal clear, slight headache, vision blurred and hands shaking, ..., ZONK! Crystal clear lasts no more than a few seconds, so slight headache is the normal state. You can't play the game for more than 4-5 minutes before you must light a candle or torch and stand there for five minutes (yes) to improve sanity. If you reach "..." that will be ten minutes. You spend as much time standing around as you do playing the game. That is not spooky. You are continually hitting the TAB key to check sanity. Boring.
It should also be mentioned that there is a timed action sequence which requires considerable hand/eye coordination. This sequence is followed by two sequences which are, in effect, timed because you have your sanity to worry about and you must keep moving with good hand/eye coordination. One walkthrough says that these sequences are the most difficult in the history of gaming.

I never did check my sanity. I simply kept moving and I definitely didn't stand still for one minute, let alone 5 or 10! I can't imagine what sequence the walkthrough is talking about - I didn't find any of them particularly difficult and I played on the normal difficulty.
But it's definitely not a game for everyone's taste!

This doesn't sound like my "cup of tea". I'm happy to see some who liked it tho. "to each his own". If anyone is interested in purchasing it just Google and find it at that cheap price. I am going to pass on it. Thanks for your input Love, Betty Lou

But it's definitely not a game for everyone's taste! If you light a candle or torch as soon as you enter a room, sanity is less of a problem. However, there is a limited supply of lantern oil, and you do not know how many lighters you will find and need for the rest of the game. I would be interested to know here how many who played the game believe that jumping on boxes floating in the water in a timed sequence was easy.

Gotta say, I didn't have a problem with the jumping on floating boxes part. But then, I play a LOT of action, shooters and RPGs. I also use a CyberSnipa keyboard gamepad.. I'm not sure it would have been so easy with a regular keyboard.
And, yes, there were many times I was playing in the dark when I ran out of lantern oil! But at the end I had tons of tinderboxes left over.
I can't tell you how many times I've gotten some action sequence perfectly the first time and then if I have to go back and do it again... no way!! Glad to hear I'm not alone!

Gobobby, I didn't find that particular part difficult. However I guess this is like in other parts - if you fall in the water you are probably killed but after a couple of killings the monsters disappear and you can run safely in the water.
I am a pack rat and was not using many lights, I ended the game with maaaaany, I didn't have problems with sanity though, I was not staying for long anywhere unless I needed and then I use one light.

I didn't use many lights either - mostly because it kept the creepy scary factor high!

When I go back I think I will restart and get as many lights as I can, not as brave as Draclvr. I think I wasted some when I first started.
What kind of magic spell to use?

I played through the demo and thought it was pretty cool.
What I thought was really interesting... is how many people are talking about this game... and how much feedback there is about this game on many forums, etc. - Metacritic.com shows no bad reviews (out of 32) and alot of people are posting it is the scariest game they ever played.
