Some adventure games are set in locations that correspond to real locations or are based on real locations. Some of these are also very immersive, so that by the end of the game you feel as if you've visited the location. What are the top five game locations you would include in a (fantasy: unlimited time & money) adventure game vacation? My picks would be:

1) Eger, Hungary (Yoomurjak's ring)
2) Rennes-le-Chateau (Gabriel Knight 3)
3) Island of Capri
4) Norkkoping, Sweden (MDNA games)
5) Bavaria, Germany (home of Neuschwanstein Castle, which appeared in Gabriel Knight 2)

I also liked the castle region from Gabriel Knight 2.
Broken Sword had Paris.
Zak McKracken had the pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge.

Alas, you can't get there from here. <g> Although I would like to see Neuschwanstein...and say, was there ever an adventure game featuring Holland?...my top choices would be Rubacava and Valadilene.

Good thread. I'd include the Devon/Cornwall area of England (Lost Crown/Bracken Tor) and the Island of Malta (Scorpio Ritual) and Siberia (Tunguska).

I felt the Gabriel Knight locations were interesting in all three games - and held true to the real thing

I also agree that the Carol Reed game settings in Sweden were excellently portrayed

And scenery in the first two Broken Sword games was very realistic too - especially for Paris

I would have to add Istanbul, from the game Byzantine. I actually did go there and search out the Basilica Cistern and the book fair, based on the game.
Prague from the Still Life games is another great city to visit.
Ditto Capri, and keeping the local faith, I have to mention The Sydney Mystery!

I had a fantastically good time in all the locations in 80 Days: Cairo, Bombay, Yokohama and San Francisco -- the latter particularly. Perhaps that was due in part to the vehicles you could use to get around on: the flying carpet, sports car, motorised rubber tyre, etc. Whenever I replay 80 Days I tend to spend a mad hour or two just whizzing around at 100mph in my vehicle of choice, knocking pedestrians for six.

I did Rushes - it was a good game - I remember having to use a walkthrough a bit more than I wanted but a good game anyway.

I've enjoyed visiting all of the locations I've ever been to in adventure games. My favourites are the various places in Germany (Gabriel Knight), Sweden (Carol Reed), Ankh Morpork (Discworld), Hungary (Yoomurjak's Ring)& Syberia.

I wasn't sure whether you were asking for favourites or ones to include in future adventures - but for future adventures just anywhere that I haven't already 'been to'!

Great question. Not sure if you're asking what other places we'd like to 'visit'... or places that have already been used. Both are near & dear to many hearts here. I've toured lots of places from my computer, but looking at the titles listed here, I've got lots to go!

I'll add "Golden Gate" to the list of places already used.... an older game with limited SF locations, including Angel Island. I liked that we could travel back and forth from current day to the 1700s. Be nice to see a remake, using today's game creation technology... probably giving 'tourists' many more places to visit.

Neuschwanstein Castle has also been featured in a non-AG. It begins as a jigsaw puzzle, that, when completed, can be entered and explored in 1st-person perspective, plus, you get a 'lite' adventure-game experience as you 'walk' through the environment, solving little mysteries & puzzles (Wrebbit's "Puzz 3D CD-ROM", aka "Bavarian Castle").

the american west -pueblos ,grand canyon ,that sort of thing
and lastly , i'd love a game that took place in the gardens and arboreteums of a large estate !

chrissie and Carrie: Originally I was thinking of places one could visit that have appeared in existing adventure games, but you both (simultaneously!) suggest an interesting second list of preferred locations for future games. I'd opt for a game in a non-english speaking city (with subtitles, as in Yoomurjak's Ring) with some history to it.

Thanks for the destinations mentioned so far. (My list of games to get just got longer). I think a five-city itinerary is not large enough, and several (virtual) vacation trips could be put together.

I like the "can't get there from here" suggestions too (Ankh Morpork, Rubacava, the moon and Syberia). To those locations I'd add the area around Border House in Stark in Longest Journey. It was the oddest feeling to revisit that location in Dreamfall after many game years had passed...it had changed substantially but I still knew my way around.

Maybe because I'm in Europe I've been very lucky to have visited most of the locations:Paris, Hungary, Istanbul,Cornwall, Devon and Capri (and my hometown, Rome, I was born near the Vatican City as seen in Broken Sword - Angel of Death).
I want desperately to go to Neuschwanstein (planned the trip twice and at the very last minute I couldn't go) and I wouldn't mind to go to Rennes, even if I've seen so many documentaries about it that it's no more one of my priorities.
I love "rough" scenery myself, hence everything with castles, forests and cliffs suit me fine, but I would love to see a game set in Prague, magical town (maybe something about the Golem?)

PS When I was working in Munich a few years ago, I was so struck by the locations I knew from Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within that I emailed Jane Jensen to thank her for preparing me so well. At Neuschwanstein (sp?) I felt like I could have taken over the tour group, hee hee.

All the places I would pick have already been mentioned - all three Gabriel Knight locations, Paris in Broken Sword, and Prague in Still Life.

For non-real life locations, I would add Rubacava from Grim Fandango and of course, Arcadia from The Longest Journey (hence my "Location." )

If non-real places are being considered then I would certainly include all the locations in Journeyman Project III

Carla, there is a free game set in Prague in its third (I think) installment. The Devil's Shroud Other parts take place in Lyons and Turin. No golems. <g> Just mad monks set on bringing the devil back to rule the world.

I really enjoyed this game and it bums me totally that I can't seem to play Part 4 on my Win7 Pro 64 bit.
