Windows XP and my Viewsonic Monitor #715451

Under Display Properties > Settings Windows XP lists my monitor as a Plug and Play Monitor and not my specific Viewsonic Monitor (as 98SE did).

It does not list all the resolutions and colors both my monitor and video card support. The low resolution 640 x 460 is missing. I don't know whether or not there are others. It only lists 2 color choices: Highest (32 bit) and Medium (16 bit).

The problem is I have a few older games that require the 640 x 460 resolution and 256 colors. I know that at least one of them require that these be set before starting the game.

So, my question is: Is there a way to get XP to recognize my monitor by name, or at least to list the 640 x 460 resolution and 256 color choices?

Thanks for any advice and assistance.

To have windows recognize your monitor you need to install the drivers that came with it. Otherwise, the plug and play settings are applied.

Under the display properties you should see and option to show all resolutions - enabling it will allow you to select 640x480 by 256.

Yes, what Inland said. I have a View Sonic monitor on both my XP computer and my Windows 7 monitor. I had to install the drivers that came with it on both computers before the features you describe were available.

If you don't have a driver disc for your monitor, look up the model on the Viewsonic website and you can download drivers from there.

InlandAZ, Draclvr, and Jenny100, thanks so much for your quick responses.

InlandAZ, I found the option to List All Modes and it gives a list of all the supported resolutions, colors, and refresh rates. According to Windows XP Help, from that list I can select the settings I want. When I get ready to play one of those games, I'll try it. If it doesn't work, then I'll install the Viewsonic drivers.

Jenny100, I do have the CD that came with the monitor, but I didn't use it. Under Win98SE I never had to install drivers for my monitor - it automatically recognized whatever monitor I was using and listed it by name along with all the supported resolutions, colors, and refresh rates.

Again, thank all of you for your quick help and advice.
