The GeForce 9400M is low end.
Try reducing the Graphics Quality settings in the game's options menu. Check under "Expanded Settings" for things like background characters, character presentation quality, and quality of scene presentation, which you can turn down or turn off. Reducing screen resolution might also help, if the game offers more than one resolution.

eek Oh Jenny I know you have helped me many times in fact you probably won't remember but when I bought this Toshiba Qosimo X 300 14 U and asked for advice if this would be a great gaming computer If memory serves me correct you agreed.

I am shocked beyond belief when you said I had a low end graphics card. Please will you or whoever reads this first will you take a look at the computer I am using and tell me is this a low end graphics card? I don't understand I right clicked my Nivida control panel and it says 9400 M G but the specs on what I bought says the below? How can this be?

I want to buy witcher 2 and I know that needs high end graphic card. If I don't have a good one now can you please recommend me one from Nivida that I will be able to play high end graphic intense games like the above?

Now your telling me I have to turn graphics down for Black Mirror 3 and I will do that if I could, the problem is I have no cursor to do this. I don't know what the problem is. Black Mirror doesn't give me a cursor to move, a white arrow is stuck on left side. When I get out of game again I have a cursor. What do I do?

manufacturer : NVIDIA®
type : NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800M GTS with NVIDIA® SLI™ technology supporting TurboCache™ technology
memory : 2x512 MB dedicated VRAM (up to 1,791 MB total available graphics memory using TurboCache™ technology with 3 GB system memory)
memory type : GDDR3 (800 MHz) Video RAM (resp. Video RAM and system memory combined)
connected bus : 16x PCI Express

An Nvidia 9800M GTS isn't a bad card at all if that's what you have.
You said you had a 9400M before, and that's nowhere near as good. Maybe you have the wrong drivers loaded for your video card? Where did you get the drivers from? If you let Windows choose them, it may not have done a very good job.

The game might be misbehaving because you have the wrong drivers -- or at least suboptimal drivers. If you can't even get to the game menu and options menu, it's going to be hard to change the settings. Let me see if I can find something.

------------------------------

Even with a Geforce 9400M I think the game would play OK as long as you don't have everything maxxed out. If you have a Black Mirror III folder inside your My Documents folder, there seems to be a config.xml file inside that folder. Maybe it could be edited with Wordpad, but it's quite long. I could upload the config.xml folder that my game created. The game seems to be running fine on my computer with this config.xml and it has a much older video card than yours. But I'm not sure if my config.xml file would be compatible with your game since I have the UK version of BM3, I have a full screen LCD monitor, and I'm using XP Home. But I've uploaded it here
http://www.sendspace.com/file/lfl19m
if you want to try it. You could also try moving your current config.xml file out of the Black Mirror III folder and see if the game rebuilds it after you restart the game.

But I think you really have a driver problem rather than your video card not being fast enough. A 9800 is plenty fast.

I was wondering if this was your Qosmio laptop. If I remember, it was supposed to have two 512 GB GTS 9800 cards in SLI and 4 GB of system RAM.

I also remember having extreme "laptop envy!" Hope you get this sorted out soon.

Have you tried to disable SLI and just run one card. I also have 2 cards Nvidia 8600GT and when I enable SLI I have constant freezes and lock ups.
All my games run just fine on the one card (512 MB)

Sherryah, you might also try looking in your DXDIAG to see what it says about your video card and what drivers you have. Or download and run the free Speccy from the same people who have CCleaner.

Yes it is the same computer that I promised my husband by getting such a upgrade in a computer not to mention price, that he said he didn't want to hear the words,I need another computer.

Thank you for giving me the free download for speccy but I am horrified how can this be that it says I have a Nivida 9400 M G ? How can switch on me I know it was a 9800 something is really weird. This is what the computer says it should have. Remember I have had this computer for 2 yrs and sad to say did not buy extended warranty. I also never had a problem with this graphic card before. I REALLY believed I had all of this included in my Toshiba Qosmio X300-14U

Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium 32-bit Edition (pre-installed, Toshiba-Dual-HDD recovery)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium 64-bit Edition (pre-installed, Toshiba-Dual-HDD recovery)- Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor QX9300- DVD-RW SuperMulti drive (Double Layer)- 4096 MB (2048 +2048) DDR RAM (800MHZ)- 17" Widescreen TruBrite® XGA (1440 x 900) High Brightness display

Speccy information said I have all the above but one major difference HELPPPPP this can't be true. It says

Nivida defaul on Nivida Geforce 9400 M G

Did this happen because a wrong driver was updated to it? I hate upgrading video card driver but I may have done this.

Oh please make one of the worse computer days of my life a good one and someone please help me figure out how to get all that I paid for this computer. It cost me 3000 euros 2 yrs ago. I am devastated. I don't want to reformat it does say I can put the computer back to factory default however I pray I don't have to resort to do this.

I want to order witcher 2 and was so excited told my husband when I saw the computer specs, don't worry I won't ask for a new computer or video card, I won't have to ask for that for years. He is not a happy camper right now and thinks I got ripped off but this can't be. There must be another explanation. My heart felt gratitude whomever takes mercy on your gameboomer Sister and helps her out. I am not computer genius so please keep it like you would teach a child how to fix it or what to do. I know there is a way to make this a 64 bit also but I really didn't want to do that. I am so confused right now, just want what I paid for. Thanks Draclr for saying you had laptop envy because right now I feel pretty stupid and wondered if I bought a lemon. I know your smart so it must not be a lemon, just something dumb I did wrong right? like downloading wrong driver perhaps? If so please give me right driver to download url. here is my URL to my computer.

There are many drivers that have not been updating, I FEAR updates when I don't know what I am doing. It is obvious I must have done something horrible to my red lady, she is a beauty all bright red, with red back lights. The most beautiful laptop I have ever had.

uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com

Thank you Draculr and updaisy and Jenny, I need someone to figure this out who has more computer knowledge than I do. Qosmio X300-14U

I think it must be because you have the wrong drivers for your video card. A Qosmio X300-14U should have a 9800M GTS and I'm not aware that they made any of this Qosmio model with a 9400M. So I don't think you got cheated.

It is possible that the wrong card will be displayed in DXDIAG or Device Manager if you're using the wrong drivers, or using drivers that weren't made specifically for your card. I don't know where Speccy is getting its information from, but if it's from the same place as DXDIAG and Device Manager (which is from the video drivers) Speccy may be wrong too.

See if you can locate the video drivers the computer originally came with. You probably did update them at some point -- or Windows update may have done it if it offered new video drivers as part of a list of updates and you didn't check everything on the list.

You shouldn't need to reformat or anything, but you may need to find better drivers if you want all your games working.

Can you find the driver date and number of your current video drivers in DXDIAG? Run DXDIAG, Choose the Display tab, and look on the right side of the window for info on driver date and number. If these drivers are less old than your laptop, then they were updated at some point. I'd be very surprised if they were the ones that came with your laptop.

As for why the Black Mirror 3 game won't work, Upsydaisy may be right about disabling SLI. You don't need it for adventure games, though you might need it for Witcher 2.

Hi Jenny
Thank you so much for your fast response. This has really stressed me out to the max.System info says Nivida 9400 M G
DX says this I don't see a date for last update for driver. is it included below? Did you look at my Qosimio X300 14 U at website? Are you sure it said 9800? Is there more DX info that will help to figure out what is going on?

See if you can locate the video drivers the computer originally came with. You probably did update them at some point -- or Windows update may have done it if it offered new video drivers as part of a list of updates and you didn't check everything on the list.

EDIT AGAIN ...........URGENT
If I have two graphic cards installed on your Qosmio notebook and the nVidia driver WHY is it not mentioned in DX or system info? No mention of SLI. If I Screwed up and put update on wrong driver from Nivida instead of toshiba the warning is only drivers from Toshiba has the heat protection in it. Oh what a mess I am in.

Toshiba Forum said the drivers on the nVidia website are for desktop PC’s. You should only use the drivers from Toshiba because they have an overheat protection.

EDIT YES AGAIN..But really urgent you read this
and see if this is the problem. If so I don't have a clue how to fix this but the URL on Toshiba forum is where I read this and I will include the URL. Your right it should be 9800

FORUM USER WROTE THE BELOW
Hi all, i have installed the latest Beta drivers from Nvidia, but you have to modify them a little,
as they are not recognized, because Toshiba has the drivers listed under them.
Nvidia does not step on the toes of dealers that use their drivers.
The hybryd set up, which is what we have in our systems, uses Physex and
also uses the on board 9400M gpu for when on battery , to save power.
SLI is enabled by playing in your power settings reachable by the screen saver set up.
Set it up when plugged in on battery to everything max.
Also, because this is a hybrid set up, Pcwizard,
and most other programs do not recognise it,
and list it falsely as something else, trust the Nvidia. It is running SLI.

EDIT...................FOR MILLIONETH TIME LOL

Hi Sherryah,

When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool screen pops up, look for a tab at the top that says "display." Click on that, and on the new screen you should see information on the righthand side with the heading "drivers." Underneath that a couple of lines down, it should say "version," which shows the version number of the drivers you are using. That's the information that Jenny needs; it will show the version number as well as the date. wave

wave Marian,
Thanks for trying to help me also. Please check out the DX and tell me is the version info included in what I sent? I copied everything and did go to display. If so what date did I update them? Bad news it probably was from Nivida website and I should have done Toshiba for heat protection to my laptop is included in driver.

EDIT.........BIG RELIEF
I have SLI I had to turn all my battery options to maximum not balanced, and SLI graphic card info came up at task bar. Big relief even though my system info doesn't show it, or DX I have SLI and that means 2 graphic cards right?

If you go to Control panel and Device manager, click on display and your two graphics cards will be there. To disable SLI you can do so in the Nvidia control panel

I've run into this issue with Toshiba laptops - You should never install video drivers from anyone other than Toshiba, because they modify them for each specific model.

Try downloading them directly from Toshiba and see if the problem resolves itself. You may need to run Driver Cleaner to completely remove the old drivers.

According to your DXDIAG, you have

Driver Version: 7.15.0011.7689 (English)
Driver Date: 11/6/2008

That sounds like old drivers, though they could still have been updated at some point and be non-Toshiba drivers.

I'd go with what Inland suggests. Try drivers from Toshiba's site. You should be able to find Display drivers ***here***.

And if you're still having problems after installing those, try a Driver Cleaning utility that gets rid of the last traces of old drivers.

What happens when I remove video driver will I still have a images on the monitor? Thank you for your help all of you. Will the new install un install the old drivers? Question I don't understand Jenny or Inland shouldn't my Qosimo 300 14U show 2 sets of video cards? No where does it say I have 2 drivers even system info shows 9400 M G CARD by Nivida. How could everything be replaced like this?

I am so nervous to do this, but for now on will never go anywhere but Toshiba for drivers. Inland have you heard of system info giving false info on a video card before and false info for the chipset also? Is this normal because it is a hybred?

SLI I did change in my battery options. SLI does show up in task bar when I put high performace on or balance. So does SLI prove I have 2 graphic cards?

Thanks for everyones info and not leaving me alone with this video card nightmare.

One question if I have to take it to be repaired would you suggest I push this to 64 instead of 32 OS because I do have an option. Games like my BFG and Dragon age, Witcher1 and really trying to fix this video card issue for Witcher 2. Are most games compatible now with 64 OS?

Would you suggest I partition it off to one drive has like C has 32 OS and other drive D has 64?

One last question, My dell XPS 420 Desktop CD drive just bit the dust. What CD drive do you recommmend to replace it? I need European dvd/cd drive since I live in Europe right?

Forgive me for so many questions but I will be grateful for someone to answer all the questions.
I feel so dumb when it comes to computer Tech stuff.

EDIT........Updaisy No device manager does not show any video driver but Nivida 9400 M G digitally signed by microsoft

Yes. It will look like it does in Safe Mode.

It's hard to know for sure. It may do a good enough job, or you may have to use a driver cleaner to get rid of the vestiges of the old driver.

It might not if you're using drivers that don't know how to handle dual graphics cards.

It's more like the drivers you have installed not recognizing the capability of your video card(s).

Yes it's not uncommon with "unified drivers" that are meant to work with a wide range of models.

Quote:
Is this normal because it is a hybrid?

It happens with single cards too, and with desktops not just laptops.

Quote:

Yes. You wouldn't see that option if you didn't have two cards.

With 4 GB of system RAM you wouldn't see much benefit, and you might have some games that only work in 32-bit (some Big Fish games).

But having the wrong drivers installed is not a very serious problem. Just try the drivers from Toshiba and see if your video card shows up correctly in DXDIAG and/or Device Manager.

Most would be, but they're still compatible with 32-bit too.

That's a lot more difficult than changing your drivers, and you'll have to buy a second operating system disc/license. I just don't see much benefit to it.

The country it's sold in doesn't matter. But if your drive is connected by a SATA cable, you'll need a DVD drive that uses a SATA cable. And if your drive is connected by an IDE (PATA) cable, you'll need a replacement DVD drive that uses an IDE (PATA) cable. (IDE is the older name for PATA).

Thank yOU Jenny, your so precious you answered every question. One thing Dell XPS 420 Desktop TM 2 quad CPU Q6600. What cable does that take?

I just need to replace my CD/DVD becaues CD got stuck and even emergency button won't open it CD tray. Is 24 speed still the best at a reasonable price. Will all CD/DVD drives fit into a Dell XPS 420 Desktop?

CD Drive tray kidnapped my Black Mirror 3 brand new didn't get to install it in desktop. Laptop can't play it because of no cursor hoping the driver issue will fix it.

According to a Google search, the XPS 420 uses a SATA connector for the DVD drive.

Did you ever get the CD out? DVD drives are supposed to have a tiny little hole on the front that you can stick the end of a paperclip in to get them to eject even when the computer is off. It's not particularly good for the drive to open them this way, but since your drive is a goner anyway...

The case should take a standard size DVD drive.
There are installation instructions ***here***.

Thanks Jenny again you have helped me. I am downloading driver tomorrow at Toshiba been playing another game all night BFG dark dimensions. I need to get some sleep and tackle the driver problem when I get up.

Yes, I did the paperclip trick in the little hole but it isn't working in my Desktop Cd/Dvd drive in the desktop. 2 computers and both are in crisis mode.

Thanks for letting me know about Sata cable for Dell. So all CD desktop CD/DVD drives will work on my Dell XPS 420? It doesn't matter about European voltage right?

The computer's power supply converts the AC current from your power outlet to the DC power the computer can use. So you don't have to worry about European voltage as far as your CD/DVD drive is concerned. The power supply is taking care of things for you.

Me too since I recently bought a Toshiba laptop for my DIL, though she doesn't play games she might not find a need to update the drivers. Or would she? I hate doing stuff like this long distance!

What kind of magic spell to use?
