I have got a malicious worm on my pc I was wondering how is best to get rid of it. Does anyone know any free or cheap antivirus programs that could do it?

The virus is on my main partition I'm now having to use my other one cos I can't access the internet or load anything up in the one infected.
Please help
Thanks.

What antivirus software are you using? Have you updated it and run a scan yet?

If your antivirus software doesn't get it, you can always download, update and run the free version of Malwarebytes. I would download it to your uninfected computer and copy the installation file to thumb drive and install on the infected computer from there. You may have to do it in Safe Mode. Just go ***here*** and download the free one.

But try scanning with your antivirus program first.

How do I update the malware program cos I can't get on the internet in safe mode and I can't in normal mode cos the worm virus is shutting everything down.
I've ran it once and it found some stuff but not the worm it's sadly still there so I think I need to update the software.
Would it work if I saved it to my usb stick and installed it also to there then ran the updated one from that?
Hope that made sense
Thanks

When you booted into Safe Mode, did you select Safe Mode with Networking? You should be able to get to the internet in that mode.

What did your antivirus software find? What are you using?

If you regularly download your windows updates, you may have a copy of the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool. To see if you do, right click on your desktop and Select "New" and then "Shortcut", In the window type MRT. If the program is there you will get a shortcut on your desktop which you can click on to run the program. I once needed to use this for a horrid worm that did the exact thing that you are describing, Ritchiesbabe. The MRT found it and got rid of it. It really saved my bacon!

Hi Richiesbabe.

There is another very good program you can use - it's called Superantispyware ( Google it ).

It's available as a free download, portable, and paid.

If the virus you have won't let you run or install any AV program, then download the Superantivirus portable version to a thumb drive and run the program from the thumb drive this way the virus can't stop it from running - yes - some virus infections even kill the AV processes - disable the Task Manager, and even prevent you from uninstalling from the Control Panel!!

This is why we like the superantivirus program's portable version - and it finds a lot more stuff than some of the others out there.

Good luck

I have Superantispyware on a thumb drive, but haven't had the occasion to use it yet. Love that portability feature..

Draclvr -

I can't tell you how many times Superantispyware helped me get control of a customer's machine so I could clean it up where all the other like programs could not.

Keep it handy - it's a great tool. thumbsup

I'm sure it's only a matter of time - like perhaps Thursday when I have to go rescue a computer!

Thanks guys I used malwarebytes and found 100 items I thought my pc was running slowly lol. Didn't shift that worm virus so tried superantispyware but that wouldn't seem to search on my pc.

Then I had a brainwave it was very simple to get rid of the nuisance in the end.

The worm was hidden in a subfolder as soon as I searched defender.exe on the other section searching hidden folders it was found and promptly deleted and now I'm back in the main section yay.

I have sound now the other bit was just a backup in case things got screwed up so my sound card wasn't installed in that bit. So glad to be back in.

Never going on that digitalspy site again only reading some gossip next thing I knew it had downloaded an exe and hijacked my pc.

Thanks for the help I hope things are running faster now.

You never answered about what anti-virus software you're using, but I hope you are keeping whatever it is updated and running regular scans.

I also hope you're out of the woods, but don't be surprised if you're not. Sometimes these things are hidden in your MBR and will respawn the next time you boot up.

You might run another pass of Malwarebytes too - sometimes it will pick up more. And do try the Superantispyware again. Maybe it will work now. And definitely get a full scan with your anti-virus software. Don't let your guard down yet.

EDIT: Oops, sorry! MBR is master boot record depending on what OS your running.

Richiesbabe,

One more point I feel is worth a mention... whatever antivirus you have or decide on, make sure it's up to date as Draclvr said - but also make sure it's the only one you are running or have installed on your PC.. It's not a very good idea to run more than one - they tend to "fight" each other, may even slow your PC down by soaking up resources.

By all means, run your scans with them - one by one of course - then when you are satisfied, just uninstall the extra ones.

Keep them handy though - these things do have a tendency to re-invent themselves or come out of hiding some time later on. eek
