I've finally decided to invest in one of these two consoles, but I don't really know which one to go for to satisfy my gaming needs. Your feedback would be most appreciate to help me make an enlightened decision.

Let it be known that I enjoy playing mostly adventure (obviously!), RPGs and the occasional shooter (survival horror or sci-fi).

So go ahead everyone. Convince me!

Ikonius, there are games that are exclusive to each platform, but there are also many games that come out for both.

I know one of the big arguments used to be that one had an internal hard drive and one didn't, but I think that was several releases ago.

Hopefully, members who have kept current with these platforms will have better input for you. wave

The XBox 360 has more adventure games made for it.
I think the closest the PS3 has to an adventure game is Heavy Rain.

Check into the exclusives for each and see which one suits you best. I looked at the XBox for a granddaughter a while ago and decided it had little for her to play. The PS3 has The Last Guardian releasing in the future and that convinced me to buy it for myself. The Uncharted games have a lot of adventure. There are a few RPG games on both. I never played a driving game before, but I really enjoyed Burnout Paradise on the PS3.

I have a PS3, bought 2 years ago, I decided for this because it had Blu-ray and at that time my PC didn't have it. I think it makes very little difference which one you get, but there are some, the PS3-only games I played were good but I know there are also good games X BOX-only. As far as I know there are no games that are pure adventure without action for consoles. I play adventure games in the PC and most of the action, mainly shooters, in the PS3.

You can find good discussions in HERE, hope this helps luck

IIRC there are a number of Sam & Max games available for the PS3, as well as at least one Monkey Island, but aside from a few HOG-esque casual titles...yeah, that's about it for pure adventure. There's been a recent fiasco with the PSN, though, so you wouldn't be downloading them for a little while. Can't speak for the Xbox in this respect.

I chose the PS3 mainly so I wouldn't have to keep sending my console away for repair/replacement every other week (the 360 was notorious for its Red Ring of Death at one point, and even if that issue has supposedly been rectified in later iterations, well..."it's still Microsoft." grin). The PS3's primary strength is really more as an all-purpose entertainment machine, though; as mcc said, it's got the Blu-Ray, and a bunch of other services and features beyond just gaming. There's a nice (long, somewhat technical) rundown of the comparison here; and the exclusive games are listed here.

I have the XBox because when I bought it there seemed to be more games on it within my preferences. It is clearly also aimed at being an all round entertainment console and the picture quality is good.

My only issue is the controller, but that probably applies as much to other consoles: I find that thumbsticks lack the precision of mouse/keyboard, especially on FPS games!

My point was only that the Xbox is usually seen as the "hardcore gamer's" console (with its generally superior online gaming service), while the PS3 is marketed as an all-in-one multimedia center (the list of supported formats is, comparatively speaking, fairly huge).

PS3 has the Back to the Future series which would probably considered action/adventure.

From what I understand there are more adventure games in the works for PS3 gamers, guess we will have to wait adnd see what the developers come up with.

So, if I'm not really interested in downloading videos/music and such, I would probably be better with the Xbox then?

Another concern I have has to do with being forced to provide a credit card number to download games. Now I know that the XBox has some kind of points card system, which makes sense to me security wise. Does PSN offer the same option for downloading games?

Lastly I have a technical question about either console. Could I plug it in to my pc monitor? I do have a spare HDMI cable laying around that came with the monitor (I chose to use the AV connector instead). Will the image quality be good enough on my ACL monitor?

ikonius, the quality should be good as long as you connect the HDMI cable, and remember to connect the sound to somewhere else, this you can do with a normal cable or if you have an equipment with digital input you can also use this.

I don't download games, one pays full price and cannot trade them in, I buy mainly pre-owned games at a discount and later I trade them in saving a lot of money.

As I understand one has to pay to play online if using XBOX but not with the PS3, I don't play online though.

thanks mcc. Good points smile

I plan on plugging in my headphones to play games. I live in a VERY quiet building hehe

I never thought of buying pre-owned and trading. where do you usually get them? Online or in brick and mortar stores?

As for playing online, that was never an interest of mine either.

Thanks for the tips mcc.

The one I am most familiar with is GameStop, they have for all different consoles but you really have to go in and look. Or ebay of course, probably Amazon.com too

Our family history with both consoles is XBox360 6 units - 1 still works
PS3 - 3 units - 3 still works

With the 360's we did go through the red ring of death issue, had them repaired and they lasted for a little while after that with another error code that Microsoft would not cover under warranty.
PS3 - my kids do a lot of online gaming so the software is constantly being updated and this is forced on the system. One of the updates crashed one of the units and we had to pay to get it fixed.

The 360's all of them from the cheapest used one bought at GameStop to one of the elite units are much more noisy than the PS3 with the cooling fan (or optional cooling unit) being much louder. Virtually no noise coming out of any of the PS3's. The PS3's do run much cooler.

If you are into modding the PS3's can use the 3.5 inch HD's used in laptops so you can get a smaller HD in the PS3 and put in a much larger HD (after the warranty runs out!).

The standard controllers on the 360 are much larger than the PS3 might be a consideration if you are more comforatble with one size over another.

As mentioned earlier the game library for the 360 is larger but the trend of new game writing is turning toward the PS3 I have read recently. I am going to need to find where I read that but I think I was looking over the upcoming games at E3 when I came across that tidbit. As E3 is starting in June there is a lot of sites ramping up their pre coverage.

I know the PS3 handles 3D if you have or will be getting a 3D TV. I do not think the 360's do that yet but am not sure as I have not hooked it up or researched it if does.

I think the next gen XBox will be out sooner than the PSx also might factor in.

I am sure you will enjoy whichever console you decide to go with. Hope some of our experiences will provide some assistance.

When I occasionally buy games online for the XBox they are usually downloaded to the hard disk, but I think that there are some larger games where the data is online. However this is different from playing against others online.

There are some games which you can only buy online (I think this included Braide).

My XBox has not yet suffered any technical problems but it is not really subjected to much punishment!

ikonius, in U.S. there are Game Stop "in every corner", I go to one nearby with very friendly people that knows almost each client. According to their web page they have shops in Canada, if there is not any near your place there are probably some equivalent.

I am a member, $15 a year, with that you get an extra 10% discount in each pre-owed game and something better trade in. Also one gets a publication each month, the payment is up front then you don't have a subscription with the hassle of those.

My grandsons 360 also got the dreaded "red ring of death" sent it back to get it fixed and it is still working fine. But.............on the instructions that came with the repaired machine were very precise about how you should hook it back up, one wrong step could cause it to relapse. His did, but somehow he brought it back to life. Now nobody touches it except for him, even to the extent of moving things in the bedroom, we don't even unplug the monster. So it is working fine now and has been for years.

I asked him what he would choose if he had to replace his, he said Xbox of course, why I asked. He said it has faster internet since it is Microsoft and PS 3 can't compete with it there. He did want to get the new one with Kinect, but decided to wait since he is busy with high school and sports.

I can ask him tomorrow or tonight if he happens to come downstairs. I don't think he has personal experience with playing on the PS Network, but may know others that have. The only problem with Xbox he had, besides the dreaded red ring was with being timed out when playing online. This was rather recent, I was having issues with my computer buffering forever too when trying to watch videos online. So I bought a better router and got RR Turbo and all is now well. He plays his games, shooters, with people all over the world, no issues at all.

The XBox live is a more mature set up than the PSN there is no denying that. Since you also pay for the XBox Live it is maintained better than the PSN.
I believe only the XBox Live you are able to cross talk - play one game and talk to people who are not in the same game. I dont believe the PSN network does that. Perhaps someone else knows for sure.

So you can pay to have the gold membership or go with PSN as it is free and that goes a long way with a lot of people.

In my opinion there are cons to both systems My daughter plays with people around the world on PSN and at times players do lose their connection at times and need to log back in but it is realtively painless. My son plays on the XBox live network and experiences some lag at times in his shooter games. Probably my crappy internet connection.

I also have a wireless network and we could never get an XBox to connect via wireless and had to run a cable to it whereas all the PS3 units never had an issue with the wireless.

We don't use a wireless connection either RNL, the wire goes out of the bedroom upstairs, then down to my router. The guy in GameStop said the wireless connections are not that good. We pay for the online membership, it does cost more directly from Microsoft but you can purchase the card from GameStop and Amazon, probably more places and they are a lot less. If you choose Xbox, don't put your number in to be recharged each year, cause they will do that even if you have used a purchased card. I ended up with two years all at once and wasn't a very happy camper.

XBox Live also has free basic membership, and that has been good enough for me as I do not play against others online (except occasionally on my computer), It allows you to access games and other online material, including downloading most demos.

From the original enquiry, I think that this will probably also be sufficient for Ikonius.
