When I first boot up my PC the list of info includes 'MOS Settings Wrong' Help! What does that mean?

Are you sure it didn't say "CMOS settings wrong" If so there is lots of stuff on the web on how to get your settings back. Has someone had a fiddle during the booting up process? Not a tech here, just guessing...you will need to go into your BIOS and reset settings to default. Could also be your CMOS battery going if your time and date is wrong. Hope the techs will see this soon. Best of luck.

Thanks Upsydaisy, you're right, it does say 'CMOS settings wrong'! Yes, there is a lot of info on the web but it's suggesting that there is something wrong with the battery on the motherboard?

I have read that the CMOS battery is just a glorified watch battery and it is not needed any longer to remember all your settings. These are kept elsewhere on something similar to a flash drive.
Maybe your problems lie in the BIOS settings.

No matter what the technology, it's still commonly referred to as CMOS - If your PC uses a chip that requires a battery, just replace it. Otherwise you'll continue to see the error each time you start the PC.

I've had to change a few of them - very easy. Like Inland says, if your motherboard has a chip that needs the battery (and most do), you will need to replace them after awhile.

How to Change the CMOS Battery

Thank you so much InlandAZ & Draclvr! I have no intention of changing anything myself! This is a brand new computer bought in Feb, sent back & just returned with a 'new motherboard' so I will be returning the whole lot & demanding a new system or my money back!

Ah, I don't blame you! Although if you don't want the hassle of returning etc., you could go into the BIOS and reset the CMOS setting.

Hi Draclvr, I've gone into the Bios settings (which I know nothing about) but there doesn't seem to be anything like a reset button?

All motherboard BIOS are different, but generally you have to locate the CMOS settings section. Don't know if this will help or not...

Reset CMOS in the BIOS

There's usually an Function Key that says: Load BIOS Defaults -

Thank you Draclvr & InlandAZ, as it was I noticed some damage to the PC since posting here, also I was aware that it had probably had a bit of a bashing in transit so returned it but did have a chance to back-up files & uninstall stuff at my peril! I was informed by the tech dep that it was 'smashed to pieces' so they sent me a new one which I've just got. It's exactly the same model & make but amazingly 15 days now plays! But I didn't get my antivirus disc back which should arrive soon - I'm relying on Microsoft Security Essentials at the moment - is it good enough & if so why would I need anything else. Any advice gratefully recieved!

I've been using Security Essentials for about 9 months now and the longer I have it, the better I like it. I regularly run the free Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware and have no issues at all.

Thanks again InlandAZ & Draclvr! Draclvr, I just want to be sure, if I am using Security Essentials I don't need any other antivirus at all? After paying subscriptions every year it does seem easy & too good to be true! (Although I know there are some free ones that come with lots of Ads etc!)

I use nothing else but Security Essentials for anti-virus. If I remember correctly, Inland also uses it. Give it a try for a couple of weeks and see what you think.
