My AV appears to interfere with Serpent Moon's puzzles but I am nervous about disabling it since I'm on DSL and always connected to the Internet. Now, I could unplug the modem but, believe me, if you had the problems with AT&T I've had, that wouldn't be an option. So, I was trying to think what else I could do.
Vipre's firewall has an option to stop all traffic, incoming and outgoing. Will that do the trick as far as preventing a malicious program sneaking in while I play?

You probably shouldnt have to actually turn off the modem...
But Another option that I use sometimes is clicking on the little "network connection" icon at lower-right corner and right click and select "disconnect"
When you are done with game... simply click on icon again and select connect.
However... don't do anything you don't feel comfortable with. Everyones system is different and there may be differences.
When you go to connect again it may ask which network to connect to... if you are not familiar it may be confusing... etc.

To add to Billy's comments, what type of AV are you using?, a lot of AVs have what they call Gamers Mode that you can activate while playing games, using this Mode you still have Full protection but it will hold off doing Scans and updates while you are playing the game, check it out.

Guess whose little network connection icon won't disconnect from anything? It tells me I'm connected and that's that. There's a little icon in the upper right of the pop-up window that has an up and a down arrow but if it has a function, you could fool me. Win 7 Pro, 64 bit, btw.
I disconnected from the Internet, shut down my AV and Malwarebytes and managed to play Raven Hunt without the first problem. Yess! Afterward, I just let Troubleshooter reconnect for me. There's got to be another way so I'll fumble around and look for it but right now I'm happy and looking forward to pipes that don't go "grzzt!" at me when I try to move them in that pipe puzzle. <g>

Vipre has no Gamer's Mode, Draclvr. I wish.
Oops! Sorry, Starcom!

Thanks, Jenny, I'll try that. I don't mind a few extra steps if I don't have to whine to Microsoft to connect me again. <g>
==============================later Your directions were great, Jenny, and I added a Local Area Connection shortcut to my desktop so all I have to do is right click on it to disable/enable my Internet access.
