A few weeks ago, the Quo Vadis convention in Berlin took place and one of my colleagues from Adventure-Treff was there to do a video interviews with adventure game related people.

Fortunately, Charles Cecil of Revolution Software (Broken Sword, Beneath a Steel Sky) was at the convention as well and agreed to do a video interview . smile

The interview contains some very interesting details about the future plans of Revolution Software that will interest the Broken Sword fans and I really hope you will enjoy the interview just as much I do. smile

By the way: I also shared this anecdote on the Adventure Gamers board, but perhaps this might be interesting for the Broken Sword fans. smile

When my colleague asked Charles Cecil about Broken Sword 5, Charles Cecil took several minutes to explain to my colleague why he can't talk about Broken Sword 5 in detail.

If you're asking me, the reason for that is that Revolution is already fully working on Broken Sword 5 and they don't want to share too much info before they officially announce it.
Of course this is only my personal interpretation, but I really think that's the reason for Charles Cecil's reaction towards the Broken Sword 5 questions. smile

A very interesting interview! Mr. Cecil says that the numbers are showing that its easier to sell adventure games now than it was four or five years ago (that's good news).

I also loved the bit about what he meant when he said "point-and-click is dead" a few years ago. grin He said for the next Broken Sword game, they will be returning to their roots -- a game more like Broken Sword 1 and 2, rather than Broken Sword 3 and 4.

EDIT: Something I hadn't considered before that he said -- in an adventure game, you have to introduce characters and motivation very quickly, because the gamer has to start doing things. So the tendency is to introduce archetypes, perhaps even stereotypes in terms of characters, because that makes them easy to grasp quickly.

Thanks for the link Jack. That was a very interesting interview. I'd love to see a Broken Sword 5 game in the vein of the first 2.
I'm getting a tingly feeling now. lol

Thanks for the video link, JackVanian thumbsup

I so much enjoyed listening to positive comments about Adventure games - for a change !! lol

Definitely hoping for a return to the early Broken Swords format.
Point & click and ALL laugh

I regularly re-play all my oldies from the "Golden Age of Adventure" and the possibility of something of that ilk being in the pipeline would be just wonderful yes

I'm really glad you like the video! smile

I have to say I'm really surprised by how optimistic Charles Cecil is in the interview.
He was referring to the German developers and said it's easier to make profit these days. But even if Germany became quite important for the adventure market you always hear how disappointing the sales are even over here. I'd say it's quite difficult for adventure game developers these days unless you have a game that really sells well which is extremely seldom. On the other hand, Charles Cecil has a big IP in his back so it might indeed be easier to make some money with something as well known as Broken Sword. In any case I surely wish him that he succeeds! smile

Ah, I have to get back to Broken Sword! slapforehead I bought the first and the second from GOG, as this is one older series I never played. Was really enjoying it so far. rah

Thanks for the link, JackVanian. Looking forward to this series continuing. thumbsup

JackVanian, Thanks so much for the video link. It really brightened my day to hear Cecil so upbeat about the future of point and click adventure. smile

We can dream about another great game. I liked the first two the best but learned to play and the story for the last two was great.
