Looks like my source could have been a bit more precise in asking the question. As far as I can make out, there were two attempts to make the film ( imdb.com). David Niven turned down the role in the first attempt to make it, James Mason turned down the role in the second attempt. So you're both right. As would be anyone who said John Mills
