I startedf this game about two months ago and got stuck in the intro, in the dungeon. I could not exit the area, and became very frustrated because you have to spend about twenty minutes each time you try to do this area -- and there is no possibility of saving.
I've finally come back to the game, and am having the same trouble. But this time I can't even get past the two guards at the beginning of the level, even on Easy. Can someone please help me out with this? I can't believe that I'm not going to be able to play this game. How do I knock out the guards, at least? Sneak mode does not work -- they can see me right away.

I hid behind doorways and when they turned around, nailed them with stealth mode. Although I think the first two, I just killed them with a bludgeon or blackjack I picked up - can't remember for sure.
I was able to save several times while in the dungeon.

Thank you. It all seems hit and miss for me. I can sometimes get past the guards, but I've never been able to save anywhere in the dungeon. Sometimes one of the two guards at the start is unkillable. There must be something wrong. I've been reading walkthroughs and certain events that are apparently supposed to trigger in the dungeon just don't happen in my game (for instance I have never run into anyone down there but guards). I guess I'll reinstall the game and see what happens.
Edit: Before I start all this again, can someone please tell me how to select and cast spells in this game? I can't work it out at all.

Hi Hagatha Have you downloaded patch 1.2? This patch is supposed to correct a lot of things in Witcher 2. ---- As for sneak mode, I remember from one of the preview videos that you can do something to put out the lanterns/torches, so that the guards can't see. --- As for saving in the dungeons, the game, Witcher autosaves at certain points during the game. For normal saves, you'll need to press F5 - as Witcher 2 uses the quicksaves as regular saves. If your quicksave doesn't work, I think that the 1.2 patch fixes this - along with some of the other stuff, you're experiencing... --- Word is that CDP RED is working on patch 1.3 - and that the forums will be back up around the first week of August... --- ---

Yes, I forgot to mention that you have to put out all the torches to stay in sneak mode. I am able to save at any time in the dungeon.
Remember, you're playing from the point where you let the guy live (can't remember his name), so you aren't getting the same things triggered that those of us who killed him are getting.

It's interesting to see the face behind that voice.
Now, I think I may have to give up on the game anyway, reinstall or no. When I first started playing a couple of months ago, it played PERFECTLY. Now the frame rate is so bad I can't actually play. Evderything is like walking through glue.
I have no idea what's changed on my computer since then. It seems to me that all I've done is install and play Dragon Age 2 and then Dragon Age 1. I've uninstalled Thief DS and I've deleted old game saves. I can't imagine how that could have altered things so very much on this computer. But there you have it, an unplayable game after all this effort.
I have the GOG version of the game and so the 1.2 patch does not apply to my game.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Hagatha, are other games on your computer also playing slowly? There is a Thread Here which offers a couple solutions and an Article Here from PC Gamer which might help.

I am absolutely LOVING IT, Mad! I don't know if Hagatha's computer isn't quite up to the task, but I built mine 2 1/2 years ago with components that have been left in the dust. I'm able to play it on High settings with nary a problem.
Plus, I love the way it plays and works. It's definitely taken several trips to the booklet to figure out how to make things work, but that's OK.

Mad, this is a very good game, I played once siding with the elves and later with "people". I didn't enjoy that much at the beginning because I found difficult to find the things and places for the side quests. After a good WT with maps I loved it. I got a lot better equipment the second time, I don't know if one can get something similar when siding with the elves. hagatha, may be you should post this question to the Glitches Forum with the specs of your computer, they have helped me more than once

This is also a very good indicator of whether your current computer can run a particular game. I use it all the time. Can You Run It?

Not that it makes any difference to you guys, Draclvr, but Can You Run It only works with IE and Firefox. Just found that out, being curious.

Let's put it this way, mcc. Under Troubleshooting, the program says it only supports (or is supported by, forget which) IE and Firefox. Anyway, it sure didn't like Opera.
I'm not really surprised it works with Chrome. Microsoft and Google seem to have their pinkies linked these days.

"Traveler, have you been using Opera for long?"
Two or three years now. I love Opera. It's the best browser I've ever used, the fastest, the safest, the simplest to use in my opinion. Not to mention you can use mouse gestures to navigate and Speed Dial to get to your favorites instantly...both options which Opera had before anyone else.
I also like my very skinny skin. <g> Almost nothing to get in the way of my view.

I know my computer is up to this game. I was playing it two months ago when it first came out and it was utterly flawless, it ran perfectly. Now it doesn't. All my other games are playing beautifully. It's just one of those things, I guess.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

On my daily tour around the internet, Ive found this --- Patch 1.3 is not quite here yet, but we would like to show you an early changelog with the fixes and amendments that will be implemented in the nearest update. There is still no ETA on its release so please bear with us and stay tuned for more information . source: http://www.thewitcher.com/community/The changelog is huge, listing 40+ changes, so here's an excerpt: 1. New FREE DLC – “A Sackful of Fluff” is a new quest in Chapter 2 of the game. To start the quest, visit the eccentric Elthon, who inhabits a solitary hut near the quarry outside Vergen. The quest will prove most rewarding to those who demonstrate patience. 2. Game now supports 4:3, 5:4, 16:10 aspect ratios. 3. Item storage has been added. Players can now store items from their Inventory at inns. To leave items in storage or collect previously stored items, talk to innkeepers. 4. A „Junk‟ panel has been added to Inventory to provide greater clarity in item classification. 5. New menu option added in „Extras‟ - enables players to view in-game animated sequences (flashbacks, memory flashes, dreams stolen by harpies) outside of the game. 6. A „Quickload‟ option has been added under the F9 key. source: http://www.thewitcher.com/media/upload/Changelog%201.3.pdfAlso, here's an update on the official forums: We'd like to apologize to all of our fans for the lack of official forums. We know you would have loved to have a place to hang out and talk about your love for our game on its release date, and apologize that even a month after release the forum is not in place. Unfortunately, we've run into some problems with the initial contractor and were forced to hire another so that we can get the new message boards up in a timely manner. When will this be? We are aiming to launch our official forums in the last week of July and next week we will try to post some work in progress materials. We promise to keep you updated on our progress on the forums, and we appreciate your patience. I'm not quite sure why patch 1.2 and patch 1.3 doesn't apply to people who have the version of Witcher 2 from GOG?

hagatha, have you tried to uninstall the game completely? You could keep your saves in an alternative folder while you are uninstalling and to put them again in the right folder, but only after installing the game again, starting and testing it without these saves.
The other games you installed maybe changed, probably over-righting, something needed by The Witcher 2.
