According to ***techrepublic*** the neosmart recovery disc download used to be available. But the neosmart page says
"Downloads have suspended pending copyright clarification."

Housewife.

You didn't mention the laptop's make model etc. Many of the manufacturers build their machines with a "Recovery Partition" on the hard drive.

Accessing it varies with each maker. If it's a newer DELL, you might see a blue "banner" across the top of the screen when you boot it with www.dell.com in it. You would simply hit the Alt + F11 key combo I believe which will initiate a complete rebuild. BUT BE CAREFUL - you need to back up your data first because the process involves a disk format. Once it's done - you'll have the PC or Laptop set to factory install.

Other companies like HP, Acer, ASUS etc may include a Recovery Disk Maker which will allow you to make the recovery set yourself ( need a number of CDs or DVDs - which the system will tell you )

They all do it today - just each manufacturer does it slightly different.

The advantage of this is that the Recovery Process includes all the drivers and software needed for that model - all you do after it's rebuilt is perform the updates to get it current.

Let's us know which laptop you have before you try to downloading a 200-300 meg ISO you need to burn anyway.

Hello Boomers..

It is not my computer is my brother in laws computer he has a Sony vaio running windows vista..

I found where I can download the recovery disc and put it on a disc..I gave it to him with instructions. and now he says, when he puts the disc in his computer and press "F8" nothing happens..

I am think he should go into BIOS and change the boot priority so that his CD/DVD drive is at the top and he can boot from there..

Was this disc for his specific model Sony Vaio? Or was it a generic restore disc for any computer?

Did he reboot and press the F8 key repeatedly when the Vaio logo appeared?

According to ***this***, there is a system recovery partition that is accessible using the F8 key on boot.

Hey Jenny100

according to him he did, press F8 and nothing happens..At first when he puts on his computer, it would take him to safe mode..I told him not to go into safe mode..Anyway after he got out of safe mode and he rebooted again, and put in the recovery disc and pressed F8, he could here the cd drive running, and it was loading, then he got message, saying that it was incompatible with the windows he was running..

I guess the recovery disc is a 64-bit and he has a 32-bit, I asked, but he wasn't sure..

His computer is having lot more problems then he thinks, so he is going to have someone look it over.

I can't help him I am not that knowledgable when it comes to things like that..I am limited..

Thanks guys for looking up stuff, I will make sure I pass it on to himm, every little bit helps, and I also learn from it..and alot of people benefits from it..

Love you guys..Thanks Liz

You may be right about that. See if you can get a 32-bit version of the disc.

You're doing pretty well so far. You found a recovery disc, then realized it wasn't working because you needed the 32-bit version.

If it's anything like my Sony Vaio, press F10 when you power up the PC - If there's a recovery partition, you should see it immediately.

I will let him know..InlandZ..

I told him to let his son download the 32-bit on his computer, put it on a cd and try it on his father computer and try both F8 and F10 he knows more about computers then I do..

They live in Georgia and I am in New York, I was able to give him the one I download and put it on cd to my sister to give to him when she came to visit my mom this past weekend..

I told him the site for him to download the 32-bit recovery disc, cause their where two to choose from..They had the 64-bit and the 32-bit.
and it was a site I had to pay for the download under $10 and it was pretty easy with a little time consumming..

He is going to let me know, what happens..I told him all the suggestion that you guys suggested, so he can look it over..

Let see what happens..Hugs Liz
