I've just purchased this old game from GOG and haven't figured out some of the controls yet. I'm started yesterday but I think I'll restart again but need some advice. I made it as far as the first town but have already failed several quests.

Are all the things you pick up good things or is some of it junk that cluttters the inventory? None of the shopkeepers want much of the stuff I have collected. For some things they say it looks valuable to someone but not to them. Does that mean someone in the next town may want it or is this just a random phrase? Can I store excess stuff somewhere?

I'll restart now but I'll probably have more questions later.

I have not played the game, but this herre appears to be a good walkthrough. Hopefully it will help you.

Thanks to both of you. There is a walkthrough on Gamebanshee too but neither answers my quetions. I was afraid that memory will have faded for these who actually have played this game. It really is an oldie. Thanks for trying.

Sorry we couldn't find what you need. Have you found any answers while playing?

I think in Arcanum you have to find the right merchant for the goods i.e., only armor merchants buy armor, only weapon merchants buy weapons, etc. My game guide doesn't list inventory items much except quest stuff so I can't find the answer there. What are you trying to sell? Maybe if I knew the item(s) it would help to look it up.
Things you don't want to sell for sure:
Li'tani, Heartstone, Lava Rock, Passion Root, Olive Tree Branch, Ruby, Any Ring, Mnura Coin,
Bone Dagger/Kite Sword, Black Diamond, Geode.

If you're really stuck ask the people at rpgcodex. They love this game and have played it numerous times - at least many of them have. There's also GOG's forums which also are very nice.

Also, did you download all the files from GOG - I think there should be a manual with the download as well.

Since offering help, I found to my delight that by downloading this game thru GOG.com I can play it on Win 7. I haven't been able to play it for years. What a treat!
Does anyone remember how to get the map coordinates to show up?
P.S. don't get rid of all your Kathorn gems, Rowan!!

Thanks for the links Cathy, but they all tell me what the coords are but not how to access the coords. Maybe I need to get to the world map to do it. I appreciate your efforts though wave

Wow, thanks for all the response. I've restarted 3 times because I want to get it right. I've made it to Tarant but havent't explored everything there yet.

Debra, I have a collection of metal pieces and pieces of weapon parts and plants. I'm assuming I need to gain some herbalist skills or other skill to use them up but I've been selling whatever is possible just to create inventory room. Unfortunately I can't seem to find all traders to get rid of everything and I don't have the skills yet to use them. From your special list I've found only mnura coins but I sold them. What is their significance? I'll hold on to any future ones.

The subtitle of Arcanum says it all; it is 'Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.'

Also did you know that there's an unofficial patch out by a group called Circle of Eight...

The metal pieces and the weapon pieces can be built into - ahem- weapons such as a revolver, a rifle, etc. provided you get the schematics for them. The plant parts is usefor for creating potions. You must decide at one point if you want to be more of a steamworks character than a magick character. Some things might not work for you either way e.g. if you're a magick character, you may not be able to build weapons or even take the train or something similar to that.

I think that even your appereance will net you some different dialogue.

Rowan, you would use that coin for an offering later on. As far as inventory space, I read you could use chests in inns and your stuff was safe. So, I put some of my junk in the Shrouded Hills Inn and so far it's OK.
Vendors will buy more if not all of your stuff when your haggle skill is higher if you go that route. Otherwise, they are very selective.

Debra, I read in the gamebanshee walkthrough that you can leave stuff in one of the Tarant warehouses after doing a quest about clearing out rats there. I left something there but haven't checked back yet. I bought a mnura coin from one of the vendors and had Virgil carry it for me so I wouldn't sell it by mistake. However, it's now missing out of his inventory (:

I'm plodding along slowly spending a lot of time just travelling between places and then having to return again. Looks like I'll have to invest in haggle. I haven't done that yet.

Debra, are you still playing? I'm stuck at the Black Mountain Mines and can't get past the golem. Have you got any suggestions of how to defeat him and any others? After a few hits my weapon is broken and armor damaged. I need to get through here in order to progress in the game.

BTW, my stuff in the warehouse is still there. Did you pay for your room in the inn? Perhaps you put it in the wrong room?

Rowan, The WT at this site says to use "ranged weapons, spells, or your bare hands" to defeat the golems.

I'm in Dernholm, Rowan, so I haven't gotten where you are yet. I will see if I can find anything out about the Golems other than what L4L said.
I think it's wise to max out repair so you don't have to travel back to a town to get it done for you.
Word to the wise- don't give Virgil important things to carry. Can't tell you why it would be a spoiler.
Also, if you let a follower carry - say a hexed item - and it's better than what they have they will automatically equip it.
It's been so long since I've played this and I've forgotten so much I'm not much help. frown

edit: OK Rowan, I found this and it's jolted my memory. Some monsters need to have magic weapons used against them and the golems are one of those groups.
Here' the list of tips for the golems:
Some general tips:
- Use arcane weaponry. It doesn't get damaged when fighting with ore golems and such creatures.
- Use ranged weapons or hire a follower using them/use magic.
- Lure ore golems to an entrance, change to turn based, attack till you have action points lasting only for using the entrance, click on entrance, return and so on. You could call it unlimited action points.
- Use real time and just run past them. They are slow and will eventually give up.
Good luck!!

Thanks, Debra and looney4labs. I tried ranged weapons but it didn't help me because when I target the golem I run up to his face and shoot from right in front of him. I probably don't know how to target properly and don't have a manual. One thing that did help was switching to turnbased fighting. When I did that I could run past the golem and my entourage of companions did most of the fighting for me. I'm now part way through the mines. In spite of the initial problems I had, I'm realy enjoying this game.

Debra, you got me really curious about why I shouldn't trust Virgil. It's not the first time I missed something from his inventory.

Rowan, I'm glad you're progressing. Those mines are one of the hardest areas in the game. If you're using ranged weapons make sure you're trained for bows or throwing weapons because that makes all the difference as to whether you consistently hit your target (along with your dexterity)and make sure they're magical for the golems.
Let me clarify, I didn't say don't trust Virgil just don't give him things you don't want to lose like those items I listed at the beginning. He can carry flour bags and iron shavings, etc- things that would be easy to replace and cheap to sell.
I don't know why he's not keeping them at present though. Best just to give them to another one of your party to hold.

Hi Debra. I'm having fun with this game. However, I will have to make a 3 week pause in playing as I am going overseeas on vacation. I'll be back in September. I hope you will clear out some of the baddies for me while I'm gone but leave me the loot. wave
