I hope that this is the right place

I'm "adopting" a desktop PC
WinXP
Dual Core 2.33 GH
Radeon 2400 HD video card
3 GB RAM
149 GB hard drive

with a DVD burner

A guy my husband knows is giving it to me because they're getting new PCs at his workplace, I guess. He wiped the hard drive clean and is an IT person
He knows PCs

He's given us another one but the hard drive space is too small and needs to be linked to a network. But it's beautiful smile

Thoughts?

Dear forest animals,
I've been singing for over an hour, where are you?

I'm just wondering about the PC cause it's Dual Core. I've never had a Dual Core

First, congrats with your 'new' computer.

A dual core computer (as I understand it) is a computer with two cores. Many games, especially rpgs etc. require two cores today as minimum requirements. The tech stuff about what dual cores do, I'll leave to others, but I think someone once explained to me that with a dual core the computer could draw lines, and polygons better? or faster?

That's not a bad system. If it is clean, it will make a very good all around Desktop. Dual core is like having 2 processors handling the crunching etc. If the software was written to take advantage of the "power" all the better.

The video card is also a nice bonus as it will handle High Def to a TV - 5.1 surround sound - and MS Direct X 10 - all techy stuff for "not bad!!"

Have fun with it.

O these are the answers I needed.

I don't know that much about the video card (tried to google but I need about a thousand eyes) and dual processors are a mystery

yes sureshot the PC is clean with either a wiped hard drive or a completely new drive smile

And just found out that it actually has Win7!
So I know that some of my games might not work but I still have a WinXP on another PC... just in case

I don't really need a fancy PC except for maybe a couple of games that need some type of low end Pixel Shader (?) but this was a nice surprise for me.
Shout out to very generous people who can recycle office PCs and donate them to those of us who are still in the Stone Age and to Community Centers in need of extra PCs hearts

You may or may not have trouble with your older games on Win7 - there are very many variables and many fixes - but if you do hit a snag on a particular game, please post here on GB - we will try to help.

I get a awful lot of PCs that small businesses or personal clients "recycle" for one reason or another. A good many are pretty decent systems I clean up - and recycle to someone in need or even to the local schools. They love getting them for training or even using the better ones !

Have fun with your NEW PC yay
