I have Call of Duty, and FEAR, and Half-Life games that require Steam account to play, but I refuse to buy any more $30, $40, $50 games that require an internet connection to play.

I want a good FPS that I can just install & play.

I have Bioshock 1, and Prey, and a lot of the older BIA and COD games.

Can anyone suggest another good shooter? I have Windows 7.

I just posted a GamersGate holiday thread. Bioshock 2 is on sale for 4.99! I do not believe they use steam but others can correct me.

Joe,

I don't know if you're interested in older first person shooters or not, but if you are, check out GOG. They're having a flat 50% off sale on all their games except the Witcher series (which went on sale today, $24 for both), and since their games are already very inexpensive you might pick up several you'd like. The sale starts next Monday.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I won't use Steam and I won't buy a game that requires it.

Gil.

I liked Doom 3, and I don't think it needed Steam. My boyfriend plays a game called Soldier of Fortune a lot. It's offline, but both these games are a few years old.
Failing that Mass Effect and Fallout 3 are both shooters with some RPG elements.

I used to play adventure games, then I took an arrow to the knee.

Hey, joe,

GOG is Good Old Games All the games are DRM free and there's no client to download. Except for The Witcher 2, they're all $9.99 or $5.99 so 50% off those prices is a steal.

Not all the games are creaking with age either. grin You'll see. They're planning to add 'newer' games, which means 1-3 years old.

Gil.

Mine didn't, Joe. I got it from Amazon and all it asked was if I wanted access to features only available on-line. I declined and have been playing with no issues or further nags.

Joe, you'll have to come back and share your thoughts once you get to play it. wave12

It's taking me a bit long than usual to get used to Mass Effect 2, but I'm really loving it. I'm still not very good at directing my "team" during a battle though!

Crysis was fun. And Dead Space 2 was way cool!

Bioshock 2 , unless I'm mistaken , requires Games For Windows Live . Very similar to Steam , & depending on which forum is read , some people loathe it .

It does, Creeping Doom. But I find GWL much less intrusive than Steam.

As far as I know Mass Effect 1 does not require Steam as well, I think Bioshock (the first one) does not require Steam either. Older games like Far Cry seem not to require Steam either.

For Mass Effect 2 you can, if you want to, get the Cerberus Network - free of charge. But you can also just play it without being online at all.
However, you're missing out in some great content for this game.

gymcandy, I'm glad you've already been pointed at gog.com. Really, you can get some wonderful games there at very low prices, and no invasiveness. As a bonus, most of the games of gog.com are the most updated versions with patches installed already.

I did finally break down this year and signed up for Steam. So far I have no real issues; in fact, I find it less of a problem than the EA/Bioware sites, which confound me constantly. Still, I prefer to simply have a game I can just play without a connection.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.
