Just in time; my favorite Halloween game.
Just DL'd a XP installer and a little tweaking and it's running fine so far. Thought I'd have a bigger issue (or load it on my 2000 machine.

Please share your tweaking! Even with the installer I couldn't get to work on my 64-bit Windows 7.

Once again, weeds are my life!

Be warned. Unless there is a newer version of the XP installer than amber_install_20080831test3.msi, you will not be able to complete the game.

I just went to the squirtthecat site and did not find a more recent version. I've played Amber with this patch and everything is perfect except the final scene which can't be completed.

Jenny100,
To make my comment more explicit, the squirtthecat installer does not permit entering a password into Roxy's computer. No matter what is typed, you can't enter more than one character.
That means you can't complete the game because you can't get access to the computer.

Not long after the test3 version of the installer was released, I sent a message to the author indicating the problem existed. Unfortunately I never had a response and no newer patch was released.

Go to the squirtthecat site, then to forums, then to the Amber - Journeys Beyond forum. Open the topic titled "Is Amber completable?", scroll down near the bottom and you will find a link to password.zip, a savegame that's supposed to get you past the password problem. I don't know if it works, just found the file, haven't tried it.

Right Uncle Reg,
The save game should work, although I've not tried it.

In my case, I have a dual boot system and can play the game under Win98SE. I expect that the game would play better under VirtualPC than it does with the WinXP/Vista loader. There are some video glitches with the loader under WinXP that I don't see under Win98SE using identical hardware.

cazziejoe,
Amber may try for different save directories depending on the OS but all have
"AMBER-- Journeys Beyond saved games"
as the immediate directory name.
Win98SE - My Documents
WinXP - Documents and Settings

Actually you can ignore all of the above and use any directory. Just select the directory during the save game process and go to that directory when loading games.

That's the problem. Running Win7 and when I go to save nothing happens. Same with load. Guess I'll try my Win2000 machine...
Thanks

I resurrected Amber and installed it..and started playing it. Unfortunately the CD cracked in my laptop bag. I have the serial number but need a copy of the [blip] CD. Anyone want to send me one? I HAVE THE SERIAL number. I can pay 15.00 for a copy from Amazon but why? Can't play w/out a key and I really don't want to risk a torrent download.

Please !!!

Heck with it I ordered it from Amazon for 10 bucks. This is what's wrong with copy protection. I own the game, have the key, and can't get a copy of the code from the publisher. I'll be sure to make a virtual copy of the CD this time, probably an illegal thing to do. I do it with DVD's for this very reason. This is why we need Obama's consumer protection Czar. We are being walked on as customers.

ChuckO,
I don't really understand what you're saying. "Amber: Journeys Beyond" doesn't use a key code for copy "protection." The password people are talking about earlier in this thread has to do with a puzzle in the game. Since the game was published in 1996, it may not have any copy "protection" on it at all. You need the disc in the drive (or an image of the disc mounted in a virtual drive) because it doesn't do a full install and only copies a few files to the hard drive.

If you broke your game CD, you need a new CD. The company that made the game is long out of business and there is no support for it. I don't know that they ever replaced broken game discs anyway.

I think it did have a key..maybe not. Regardless, I found a used one for 10.00 inc shipping and it'll be here tomorrow. Sorry I confused you. It's still a shame that you need the CD in the drive to play this thing. Yes, I should have made an image..or just copied the CD but I didn't. You can bet I will now! Amber was/is a great game.

When Amber came out, hard drives were much smaller and installing the whole game to the hard drive would have taken up the whole hard drive or a good part of it. It was common back then for games to install only a few files to the hard drive and play mostly off the CD. But now that hard drives are so much larger, it's better to create a virtual image of the CD and play off of that. The game is more responsive when it doesn't have to wait for the CD to spin up.
