I know I'm stupid, just can't get DOSBox to work.
I have downloaded and installed version.72, now exactly what do I do?
How do I create a "directory" for the game?
How do I put DOSBox in a folder/directory?

I have created folders and tried to "mount" them without success. I have read instructions and tips till my eyes glazed over. I just don't seem to understand.

Please help,

I'm trying to install and run "The Riddle of Master LU" on XP

Thanks~

Create a folder named DOSGAMES in your User Folders (C:\Users\Your UserID)

When you start DOSBOX enter the following commands (one at a time):

MOUNT C C:\Users\Your UserID\DOSGAMES
C:

Once the folder is mounted, install your game and reference the C: drive for the location, it will install as a sub-folder under DOSGAMES.

What about the patch, InlandAZ .... How/when would you apply it ??
[So far I can still play Riddle of Masterlu on my old Win98SE machine - but it has always needed the patch grin12]

Inlandaz, back up one step and describe exactly what I do to create this folder in my users folder.

Is it possible to install Master Lu in Virtual Machines?
That would be so much nicer.

Thanks

Whether you need a patch could depend on the version you own. You can patch the game to v2.05 with http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/dlp.cgi?lang=eng&sys=pc&file=roml205.zip&ref=ps
This only corrects some game errors not compatibility with modern systems.

I've been able to run v1.08 on an XP-SP3 system using D-Fend Reloaded without problems.
Game installed in C:\GAMES\RIDDLE
program file = MASTERLU.BAT
DOSBox priority = higher
cpu all AUTO
memory 63MB use XMS EMS UMB
graphics - full screen, surface, svga_s3
sound - ON, Sound Blaster SB16
MIDI - intelligent, default
drives
Folder___________as_______Letter I/O control
C:\GAMES\RIDDLE harddisk___C________NO

The Users folder in XP is in
C:\Documents and Settings\whatever-your-username-is

Browse to that folder using Windows Explorer or My Computer.

Right-click on an area inside the whatever-your-username-is folder where there is no icon.

Choose New, then Folder.

You can rename the new folder by right-clicking it and choosing Rename.

If the patch is in the form of an executable, you'd just start DOSBox, mount the drive, and execute it. If it's a zip file you'd need to unpack it and manually copy/replace the extracted files to the game directory.

Thank you Jenny100.

I finally got DOSBox to find the folder, but it can't seem to find the oldgames folder with Master Lu in it. All I get is illegal command. On top of that when I go back after closing DOSBox I have to start all over with mounting the dosbox folder.

I have tried loading Master Lu in Win95 in the virtual machines; freezes solid.

At this point I'm wondering if the game is really worth all the hassle.

Master Lu wouldn't even play in Windows 95 on a real computer with Windows 95. Not on mine anyway. I had to use a boot disk (floppy) to boot to DOS or play on a computer with DOS 6 installed. DOSBox is the easiest way to play Master Lu on a modern computer.

Since you're having problems with manual configuration, try one of the Front Ends listed at
http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

You can read about the Front Ends here
http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/DOSBoxFrontends

Front Ends should make configuration simpler and a one-time thing so you don't have to keep remounting your folders every time you start DOSBox. According to ***this thread*** DOSBox Game Launcher (DBGL) is a good Front End for regular users of DOSBox.

Paste the exact commands that are giving you the error - it's probably just a syntax error. As Jenny stated, a good front-end is the best way to go, I use D-Fend Reloaded.

Mad sent me a copy of these instructions for setting up Master Lu in DOSBox.
Quote:
Riddle Of MasterLu in DOSBOX by Llewton

Setup Instructions by Llewton (Bill)

Minimum Requirements:

CPU: 486\33
OS: DOS 5.0
RAM: 8 MB
CD/DVD Speed: 2X
Video Mode: SuperVGA, VESA
Sound Devices: Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster 16 Gravis Ultrasound
Input Devices: Keyboard, Mouse

DOSBOX is a DOS Emulator which in essence sets the game up in a DOS Environment You can download the program by double clicking on the link I have provided below (when it opens choose the first option , as this is the latest version). The easiest way to do this is to Download it to your Desk Top and then Double Click on the .exe file there to install the program and set it up to where you install your applications

(Example: C:\program files\dosbox).

Dosbox :

http://sourceforge.net/projects/dosbox/
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1

Make sure you take the time to perform. "The General Drill"

http://home.earthlink.net/~eddie1231/general_drill.htm

Getting Prepared to Install the Game

[Also see the extra note at the end of these instructions.]

The default path will be C:/Riddle. If you use a different location for games, install to there. For instance, I have a game folder in my

G: Partition so I installed the game to G:/games/Riddle.

After installing you will be prompted to configure the Sound and Music Cards. I chose "Soundblaster and 100% compatible sound cards" for Voice and Sound Effects and "Soundblaster 16" for Music (midi). For each one Double Click on your choice, then Double Click on Configure Automatically If the game recognizes your choice it will tell you. Then Click on OK.

Do this for both, then Double Click on Done. After this, Down Arrow to Done and Enter Your sound card is now configured for the game.

Get ready to play the game.

Open up Windows Explorer (Start-Programs-Accessories- Windows Explorer) and go to the DOSBOX Directory.

Double Click on that to open it and on the right hand side you'll see a folder that says DOSBOX with Conf. file underneath.

Right Click on this and Click on the "Edit " option.

Scroll Down to the bottom of this where it says "autoexec".

Underneath there, type the following:

(Be sure to put in the spacing as I have it.)

mount C: C:\

This is telling DOSBOX that the game is installed in your C:\ drive.

If you installed the game in another drive letter type that in instead. I installed the game in my G: partition, so I have: mount G: G:\

Now let's get DOSBOX to recognize your CDROM Drive

Note: if your CD-ROM Drive is letter 'E', then replace the 'D:' below with 'E:'. Be sure to put in the spaces where I have them

mount d: d:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl

Click on "File" on top and then "Save" and "Exit".

Scroll Down to where it says

Fullscreen=false

and change to

Fullscreen=true

This will run Dosbox in fullscreen mode.

Next look for :

Cycles=3000

Change this to:

Cycles=7050

Save and Exit as before.

Note: If the sound is choppy or the game is running slow you might try

Cycles=9050

It all depends on the speed of your processor.

Click on "File" on top and then "Save" and "Exit".

On the Right hand side you'll see the DOSBOX. EXE. file (just says DOSBOX with a square icon before it), Right Click on this and then Click where it says "Send To" then Click on Desk Top. This will create a DOSBOX Icon on your Desk Top.

Double Click on the DOSBOX Icon on your Desk Top and this will open up the DOSBOX Screen.

Begin the install

At the bottom of the screen you will see a Z:\ prompt. Type in the letter of your CDROM Drive that you put into the Dosbox config (ex. if it was D you would type in D: You will now see the Z:\ prompt change to D:\. Next type in install and you will see:

D:\install and the game install screen will come up.

The default path will be C:/Riddle. If you use a different location for games, install to there. For instance, I have a game folder in my

G: Partition so I installed the game to G:/games/riddle.

After installing you will be prompted to configure the Sound and Music Cards. choose FM (Soundblaster, 16, Pro) for music card setting. For Music port type in 330 for digital audio port 220,Digital Audio IRQ 7 and Digital audio DMA 1. Then select Soundblaster16 for your Digital Sound card. Next type in your CDROM drive letter and then click on the "Done" button on the right hand side of the setup box. Your sound card is now configured for the game.

Play the Game.

Double click on your Dosbox icon on your desktop to open it up and at the "Z:\>" prompt type C: ( If you installed the game in another directory type that letter, ex G:). Then Press the Enter Key. The screen will now change to

C:\> (or which ever letter you typed)

Next type

cd riddle

This is the default directory path for the game. If you used anything different you'd change the above to that .

(ex : I have the game installed in my G:\partition in a folder for games.) So, I type:

CD G:\games\Riddle

Then press "Enter"

Your cursor will now look like this

C:\Riddle>

or in the example above
G:\games\Riddle>

(at this point make sure the game disk is in your cdrom drive).

Now right at the bracket type Riddle " again so the line will look like this:

C:\Riddle>Riddle

Press Enter and the game will start to play.

To get out of DOSBOX …. at any point (ex. saved game and you want to quit) after exiting the game as normal you'll have the DOSBOX Screen still open. To get out simply type:

exit

and then Press the Enter Key.

Note: The sound may be a little choppy and the game may play a little slow. If this is the case hold down your "CTRL" Key while continually tapping your F12 Key. This will increase the DOSBOX Run Cycles and things should start improving. If you find that all of a sudden the sound starts breaking up again after it was getting better you probably increased the cycles too much. So do the same as before but this time, keep tapping the F11 Key till things even out (first try changing the cycles to cycles=9050 in the DOSBOX.config file).

Thanks all, I will give DGBL a try and if I can't get that to work easily, I'm calling it quits.

I just want to play a game not configure a web page.

Thanks~
