I was wondering if a 2Gb option for the AMD Radeon GDDR5 graphics card is overkill for use with adventure games and DVD's? The HP laptop I'm thinking of buying has option of 1Gb or 2Gb. I'd like to continue playing adventure games with this computer for the next four years or so...I have no idea how fast the graphic memory demands of adventure games are increasing.

More video memory never hurts, but for adventure gaming and DVD's 1GB is probably sufficient.

What is the difference in price?

Another $75.00 for 2Gb instead of 1Gb.

The 1GB or 2GB is a measure of dedicated memory, not speed. The GDDR5 would be more an indication of speed (faster than GDDR3).

What is the model number of the Radeon you're looking at?

Current recommended memory for adventure games is more like 256 MB than 1GB, so I'd guess 1GB would be sufficient. But that's a guess. I'd be more concerned with the speed and driver compatibility of the card than with 2 GB over 1 GB.

In general, I'd go with higher specs on a laptop video card since they can't be upgraded (except in some very rare cases).

Thank you both for your responses. They did not list the model number, but I found out from the HP chat agent that the model is an AMD Quad 7690 (1Gb or 2Gb). It would be used with an i7 quad (HP DV6TQE).

The specs listed in the thread below relate to a GDDR5 model - no memory size was specified.

AMD Radeon HD 7690M

Thanks, InlandAZ. Actually, if anyone's considering getting the HP DV6T there is some uncertainty (right now) as to which AMD card you'll end up with, according to a thread on notebookreview.com. I'll be doing more checking before ordering this...thanks again.
