You don't install the floppy image. You boot off of it. This is easier to understand if you have a computer that actually has a working floppy drive. But if you are getting a DOS prompt and getting messages like "format C: not correct" it sounds like you've managed to boot off the floppy image and that is not the problem.

What do you see if you type:
DIR C:
at the command prompt?

What do you see if you type:
DIR D:
at the command prompt?

What do you see if you type:
DIR E:
at the command prompt?

This will help you identify which drive is the virtual hard drive, which is the CD drive, and which is the RAMdrive.

I'm assuming that you have run FDISK successfully -- and that you rebooted the Virtual Machine after running FDISK -- or there will be no partition on the virtual hard drive for you to format.

A: is your floppy image. At least we know you have it mounted properly.

We need to know what drives C:, D:, and E: are:

DIR C:

DIR D:

DIR E:

One should be the CD drive, one the RAMdrive, and one the virtual hard drive. We need to know which is which.

Make sure your Windows CD is in the CD drive or the DIR command won't be able to read it.

Is it booting from the floppy iamge? Do you see (from the FA "Q" (not g) -

Your virtual machine should boot off the floppy image, and you eventually wind up at the A:\> prompt :-) For future reference, note which drive letter the CD-ROM has been mapped to. Mine was R: (you see something like: Drive R: = Driver BANANA unit 0)

If not, poimt me to the image file you downloaded. I'll take a look at it.

Quote:
Since many newer machines may not have the benefit of a floppy disk built into their tower, you would have to create an "image" of a floppy boot disc if you wish to have Windows 95, as this OS will not boot off the CD. Here is a free program FloppyImage152 that will extract an image from a floppy that you can capture with VPC. But don't forget to check "Create compatible IMG files" in settings.

i did everything steve says to do, and til i get to format it doesn't work, but i found this.

Delete your current Virtual machine and create a new one using the image file below -

Windows95b.img (select Diskette Images, windows95b.img)

Once the VM is defined, start it and press Floppy (on the action bar) - select "Capture Floppy Disk Image". Peruse to the location you downloaded the file above and then select "Action, Reset". It will remember the floppy mount until you release it (which you'll need to do once you've installed Windows).

From that point follow Steve's FAQ... Don't skip past any steps.

Edit -

By the way, I don't find any reference the the above quote (from you) in Steve's FAQ. Please use this one -

Virtual PC 2007 FAQ By Steve Metzler (Last updated: 3rd July, 2008)

Family is using Steve's page at Gameboomers, which has an addendum from Inferno at the end.

That explains it, I couldn't figure out where the quote was coming from smile

Using the 2008 FAQ with windows95b.img I was able to create the partition and format the drive in less than 5 minutes. Give it a shot family.
