I am in Chapter III. Solved the zodiac alter puzzle and got the key but when I returned to the abandoned house to go to talk to Richard, when I click to go through the secret passage again (where Richard is working) the screen goes black and I can't go any further. Up until then everything was going fine.

Any ideas???

Thanks

Try playing in compatibility mode. Sometimes that can be a simple fix.

Playing in compability mode can sometimes help. If it doesn't work try the suggestion in this post.

http://www.adventuregamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6505

To get it to work properly, you may need to download a no cd file. It can be gotten at Game Copy World. Just do a search for Black Mirror on their site.

Additional help is here:

Hope you get this sorted out...

Forgive me for being thick headed. Exactly what do you mean by compatibility mode?

I am playing on Windows XP (x86 based) PC.

Thanks

Karsten,
I read the post in the first link. Since there was some confusion as which file to try to remove I removed first one and then vise versa. No luck with either. They talked about "cracking" games, I have no idea what that is.

I went to the website but was unable to download anything. Different Ads kept popping up.

I am so tired of buying games and not getting to finish them (or even play them at all).

I really appreciate all of the help here you guys.

Thanks

gamegirl280,

Try GameBurnWorld. Click on Game Fixes at the top of the left column, then on the next page select B and locate the file. You shouldn't have any problem downloading from here. I've never been able to find anything on GameCopyWorld for all the 'download' links that take you everywhere but where you want to go.

Just be sure to check the downloaded file with your antivirus program. I've never had a bad file from GameBurnWorld but it's better to be sure.

Gil.

"Cracking" games is by-passing the copy "protection." The US version of Black Mirror will not work on either Vista or Windows 7 unless you use a "game crack" (also called a NoCD) that was made for Black Mirror. Sometimes the copy "protection" on Black Mirror can cause problems on XP as well, depending on the CD drive.

Gamecopyworld has gotten so full of junk that I wouldn't go there at all without an ad blocker in my web browser. Also there's no telling what sort of malware might be in those ads. Gameburnworld is better, but they generally only have older NoCD's. Fortunately Black Mirror is an older game.

I'd love for GOG or DotEMU to get a DRM-free version of Black Mirror. It would make things so much easier.

I couldn't get the US version of Black Mirror to work on my XP machine, so I ordered an UK version of it. And it works fine smile

And yes, I'd love for GOG to get hold on Black Mirror (the first) as well.

There was a problem with the original Black Mirror crack in that the person who made it misnamed one of the files -- (mejerk.chr vs majerk.chr -- I'm unsure of which name was correct). Instead of releasing a corrected NoCD, they essentially patched the NoCD, which made installing it overly complicated. That may be why the NoCD didn't work for you.

Hi guys,

I downloaded the NoCD (GER) at Gameburnworld and put into the Black Mirror folder, but I am afraid I don't really know what to do next. I right clicked the file and chose "extract here" but after that I am lost.

I also was surprised by the name of the file that came up.

Any help you guys can give me is appreciated.

Thanks.

I think that should have done it. The instructions in my NoCD said just to extract it and it would overwrite the original .exe.

You wanted the German version?

Gil.

I don't think the German NoCD will work with an English game. If it did, they'd just use the same NoCD.

That really doesn't sound like a copy protection issue to me because you're not having any problems starting the game. Have you tried updating your video drivers (or maybe installing an older driver)?

It could also be related to DirectX, you might want to update that as well.

I agree. The game is too old to have "trigger functions" built into the copy "protection." So once you pass the copy "protection" check when you first start the game, the copy "protection" should give you no further problems.

Sounds to me like a cut scene may be failing to load. Maybe you could get a save past this point. I don't remember if using the escape key in this game will skip cut scenes, but if it does, you could try trying to skip the cut scene before it loads.

Okay everyone,

I think you guys were right about the NoCD not being the fix. I did a number of things you all suggested, including re-installing the game. I also installed an older version of the driver. It is letting me get on further so far with some black screens. I just load the last saved game and keep trying to go further.

As of now I am in Chapter IV with Detective Collier at Stonering.

Thanks guys you are the best and wish me luck.

If it happens again, let us know - I can reinstall the game under a Virtual Machine and get past the cut scene for you if you send me a save game.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to let you know I was able to finish the game. After all the problems and the constant wondering if it would crash again I'm not sure if it was worth it, even though this is the type of game I really enjoy playing (more than HOG's).

thanks again for all of the help. I am sure I will be back because I have BM2 and BM3 to play. smile
