It sounds familiar, I've read it somewhere, and we've heard it before, but where did it come from? Give the name of the work or author or both where applicable.

Outstanding, everyone!  Redz, which famous speech did the MLK quote come from?  Doreen, who was the author?  (I'll take it as a given that we know "Macbeth" was Shakespeare) "Alea iacta est" was spoken by Julius Caesar when he crossed the Rubicon. It implies that an irrevocable important decision has been made with the outcome uncertain.

Excellent solves.  Wow, Haroula, I would've settled for the Book of Daniel, but you've been very precise. BTW, the verse refers to an interpretation by Daniel of three words written on the palace wall by a hand that appeared to Belshazzar after he used the gold and silver goblets taken from the Jewish temple to party with. They were: "Mene, Tekel, Parsin" Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. Parsin: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and the Persians. From this we get the expression: "seeing the handwriting on the wall"
