Does anyone know if Baldur's Gate, Sacred, Gothic 1 or 2, Divine Divinity, and Morrowind can be played on Windows 7? Any other favourite oldies?

I have played Sacred, Divine Divinity and Morrowind on my system with Windows 7 64 bit.

wave Hi Rowan, I have Divine Divinity, Might and Magic 6 and 7 all loaded on my windows 7 now and they are playing great! Had to get a couple patches and use the compatibility mode for the Might and Magic games. Don't think I had to do anything for the Divine Divinity game. Going to try Morrowind next...
Kay

oldman is faster typing than me...Now I know Morrowind will work. That's great!

Hi, Rowan. We have a Windows 7 and Games thread down in the Glitches forum. It's not 100% complete, but gives you a pretty good idea of which games will play and which ones need a little tweaking and which ones simply will not play.

Thanks, all. I never thought to check Glitches. I didn't see Baldur's Gate so I'm still hoping it worked for someone.

I can't decide which of those old games I'll replay. I like them all!

I have tried the Gothic games. They install, but they don't load to play. I have read alot of post on this, but no one seems to have a fix. Makes me very sad.

I'm sorry to hear that about the older Gothic games. I loved them, too.

Can't you buy the older Gothic games from GOG.com?

You can get all of those games from GOG at very low prices, and they are compatible with modern platforms. Right now I'm playing Thief Gold and Darkstone (anyone remember that game?) on my Vista system without having to tweak anything at all.

Edit: Oops. I don't think GOG has Morrowind yet, but the game plays flawlessly on my Vista system. Not sure about Win 7, though.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

It also plays flawlessly on 64-bit Windows 7.

Darkstone is incredibly silly and simplistic and yet somehow addictive. Great for those days when you realy, really, don't have any brain cells. Meaning I've been playing it a lot these days.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Good question, Karsten. I've got the Windows 8 Consumer Preview running on a spare hard drive and haven't gotten to test many games yet. But so far, it appears it's going to play them just as well as Windows 7. I will definitely keep everyone posted - maybe with another post down in the Glitches forum later this year.

Windows 7 won't be outdated for a very long time, Rowan!

@ Rowan

Don't worry smile

Windows 7 won't be outdated for a long time, it'll play games etc. for at least 4-5 years or more? perhaps.

I'm talking about people like myself who still has a computer from 2003 with XP on it - when I need to replace this computer in 2013 or 2014, I can only get one it with Windows 8, I think?

Unless Microsoft decides to sell win 7 for after win 8 is out? I don't thik so, though.

Karsten, you can always try Windows 8 out and if you don't like it, can always buy a copy of Window 7 and install it yourself. Windows 8 is definitely going to be a change for most people. Personally, I really like it, but it's definitely different!

I don't plan on getting a new computer for a couple of years at least, no matter what the O/S.

Worried about playing my older games, I bought a copy of XP a couple of years ago for games that won't play on updated machines. However, the advent of GOG means that I no longer really need XP, though I prefer having physical disks.

My Vista laptop is having no trouble with most new games - Skyrim ran smooth as silk, for exammple. The only games I have not been able to run well are Gothic 3 and Witcher 2, both of which were sluggish and ultimately too much trouble to play on any of my current machines regardless of the system specs or O/S.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I've spoken to my local computer shop (the guys that build my computer nearly 9 years ago). They have a copy of windows 7 for sale as a single product. They can transfer all my settings and info etc. to the computer again...

And even if I'm really happy with XP, I feel its age...
