I checked the thread of older games that play on Windows 7 and I didn't see it listed.
Has anyone played it on Windows 7?

Great! Thanks so much.
I just bought Secret Files 3 from Gamersgate and it's downloading now!
I wanted to play the first one again since it's been a long time.

Downloading from the Internet or installing from a disc? If you're downloading it from the Internet, it may already be patched.

I have it on disc. I just downloaded the patch. Do I have to do anything else or does it automatically apply itself to the game. It says it provides a different ending to the game, so that will be cool, since I haven't played it in years.

If it's zipped you'll have to unzip it, otherwise just click the executable and it will update the game.

The updated ending was much better than the first.

I thought the patch for the updated ending was for Secret Files 2 not Tunguska.

I don't recall an updated ending in the Secret Files 2 patch.

I didn't even know there was a Secret Files 2 patch. Patches-Scrolls only lists one for the German version of the game.

Maybe it's for both. But when I downloaded the patch it opened a window about the updates on it.

The updated ending 1.03 patch is for Tunguska. It's a big patch, over 250Mb.

As I recall the issue is the diabolical DRM. I tried to install it on win7 64 bit and the OS refused calling the DRM malware. Microsoft got that right.

The Adventure Company 5 game pack (Adventure Collection) Has a DRM free version of Tunguska. That installed and ran with no issues with Win 7. It might be worth your while to search it out. The five games are

Tunguska
Dead Reefs
Mysterious Island
Nibiru
Keepsake

All the games are DRM free and likely at Amazon or Half dot com you can find the set for around ten bucks.

Just last month I replayed both Tunguska and Puritas Cordis on my Win7 64 bit computer. I have the original 4 CD version of Tunguska and the original DVD version of Puritas Cordis. Both of them installed from the disks with no problems, I didn't get any reports of malware. I used a nocd patch on both of them, and both of them played with no problems. For Tunguska, there is a nocd patch available that works with that 250Mb 1.03 upgraded ending patch.

It's been reported that the disc version of Secret Files: Tunguska uses Tages v5 (v5.5, v1.03: v5.5.2.1) + TagesCap
Since this older version of TAGES may cause problems with Windows 7, you can also try updating TAGES to the latest version, which should be compatible with Windows 7.

Of course using a NoCD as Uncle Reg did has the advantage of having the game start up faster since it skips the disk check. But whenever you use a NoCD, be sure to scan it for virus and spyware before using it. Usually NoCD's are clean, but it's best not to take a chance. Also, since NoCD's usually come as rar files, you need to scan them after you extract them.

Yes, if anything uses Tages, simply updating Tages to the latest versions allows games to to play on Windows 7. As much as I loathe DRM, I did bite the bullet for a couple of games I really wanted to play.

And, Jenny, thanks for pointing out that rar files need to be scanned AFTER you extract them. I didn't know that.

I have the original Tunguska with both patches to 102 and 103 and the no cd patch. Do I need to install 102 patch as well as 103 patch?

Patches are generally cumulative, so I wouldn’t think so. If there's a doc with the patch it might mention it somewhere.

Note that NoCD's are usually version-specific. The NoCD that was made for version 1.02 probably won't work with version 1.03 -- and vice versa.

If you run the version 1.03 patch, it will probably let you know if you need to run the version 1.02 patch first. Also if you look at the patches for Tunguska at Patches-Scrolls, you can see there is one specifically listed as "Secret Files: Tunguska patch 1.02 to 1.03" which is separate from the 1.03 patch.

That 1.02 patch is another 250Mb file. I did not use that one, only the 1.03 patch, and the NoCD that specified it was for use with the 1.03 patch. The 1.03 NoCD is only 750k and can be emailed if anybody wants it.

Okay, thanks Inland, Jenny and Uncle Reg. I'll just do the 103 patch, then the no cd patch for 103. smile
