I'm having trouble understanding what it was about my clue that was so illegal, in that I am sure I have seen a similar device used elsewhere in clues. However, the dictionary down the back of the trousers rendered the whipping less fierce!

I am sure I have seen a similar device used elsewhere in clues. That's always possible, Lex. It was probably one of Denis's. But a hidden word must be intact in the clue.
The moon is actually more useful than the sun since the moon gives us light at night when it's dark. The sun only gives us light during the day when it's already bright out.

It has been brought to my attention that I might have made a mistake! I know, shocking. Perhaps Iliad disclosing perhaps Odyssey? No, quite the opposite! (8) "rhapsody" IS intact within the clue, but the verb "disclosing" indicates that the hiding was done in "perhaps Iliad". Not such an egregious error, maybe half a lash worth, at most. Adding in "No, quite the opposite" doesn't clearly indicate that the clue should be switched around. My apologies, Lex. It's dangerous to rely on my memory these days, but if you do make a mistake or two in the future, you've already paid the horrible price.

It has been brought to my attention that I might have made a mistake! I know, shocking. Heresy! Constructive criticism and cheerful badinage are to be expected, not to mention a certain amount of national rivalry, but above all, have a bit of fun! All noodle scars appreciated and worn with pride (as they should be, whether fully deserved or not). Adding in "No, quite the opposite" doesn't clearly indicate that the clue should be switched around. I was trying to avoid being too clear...

...and in answer to Rog's clue, tenet = principle - tent (shelter) containing (has) e (a point).

Thank you Rog: plenty of similar dust in our conservatory where I need to finish some plasterwork repairs. Mockery of evil in odd angle (8)

bad (evil) in age (odd angle) badinage = mockery

I'm a little uncomfortable with "sue" as direct (dictionary shows as "related word"), so I'll change clue to: Movement at last on debut of play (6) no "e"
