We had a recent thread on a similar subject ***here***.
Most people seem to like the combination of Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials myself.
It doesn't nag you to update to the paid version like some "free" antivirus do.

MalwareBytes is a great program.
Some people go with the paid version since it's a lifetime license and doesn't need to be renewed every year.

And if you watch the sales at Newegg, you can often get a lifetime license for $15. The paid version runs in real time where the free version runs only when you run a scan.
