I may have posted this problem in an earlier post but I can't find it. My problem still exist and I don't know what to do. What has happened is that my computer at times will just go black or I get the awful blue screen. In my earlier post I was advised to make sure that my monitor and computer links were tight and they were tight. My computer attempts to correct my problems but it suggest that there may be some new software or hardware installed that us causing it to restart. I guess I will have to take it in to the repair shop again with hopes that they can fix it as I don't want to have to buy a new computer. Any thoughts or has anyone here have experienced this kind of problem? Please feel free to remove or link this to my previous post.

A loose monitor cable wouldn't cause a BSOD.
Black screen yes, blue screen no.
And it wouldn't cause a reboot.

It's hard to diagnose the problem over the Internet.
If you've already checked connections, and you don't want to try replacing the power supply yourself, it's probably best to take it to a shop.

I guess this is your previous thread
http://www.gameboomers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/927501

If that's the case, you say you already took it to a tech.
Did he do any repairs? Like replacing the power supply or the video card?

Go to : Control panel/system&security/system/device manager.
Make sure there are no yellow exclamation points or question marks shown, these indicate conflicts and problems.

Geo,

You were right about conflicts and problems. I did find a yellow exclamation for the multimedia controller. It states that there is not a driver installed. I attempted to update the driver but to no avail. It says if you know the manufacture so forth and soon on. It's Microsoft WPD enhanced storage password storage PCI bus 8 . I got a code28 on the driver not installed. I am giving you all this info in hopes that you may know what it means because I don't. I finaly had two options, one was to disable or uninstall and don't know if I should use either.

Since I don't know what it is either,I cannot advise on whether to Disable or uninstall. Lets wait for Jenny100.
I do know yellow exclamation points or question marks are not good and can cause crashes.

lexxy,

Disabling the device can't possibly hurt since you don't have a driver in any case. If that conflict is causing your computer to turn off, disabling the device should correct that. Once you figure out how to reinstall the driver, you can enable the device.

"Microsoft WPD enhanced storage password storage" does not read like a multimedia controller to me. If you bought this WPD hardware, there should be an installation disk with it that contains the driver. If the hardware was part of the original system, do you have setup disks or was all software already installed?

Robert,
This is a custom built gaming computer that I bought from a friend of mine. He had it for a whole so no, there was no installation disks provided. Could I purchase the Microsoft WPD hardware and have it installed or sould I just take it to a tech I trust and let him correct the problem. So you think disabling may not correct the problem but it won't hurt.

If you have access to another PC, try the suggestions below -

Microsoft WPD Enhanced Storage Password Driver

Otherwise, it's perfectly safe to disable (or completely remove) it in Device Manager. It seems to be a fairly common problem.

I finally talked to a tech who knows what he is doing, he's worked with computers for over 23 years. He asked if my computer stopped recognizing the drive, did it go blue screen and also did it suddenly reboot. I answered to those questions and he says it looks as though my hard drive is going bad. He also asked if I hear strange noises from the computer and looking back I had to say yes. After talking to him I have decided to take it in to him this week and see if he can save it. I am a novice when it comes to computers but if my had drive has to be replaced won't I loose all the data on it? I will keep you posted on my progress.

Hard drives generally make a clicking sound when they're going south - is that what you heard? Also, the WPD driver issue relates to CF and SD cards, so I'm not sure what that would have to do with your hard drive.

If the hard drive is making noises, that's a sign it might be failing soon.

It's much harder to actually boot from a hard drive than to simply get information from it.
Chances are that if the hard drive is the problem, your tech will be able to get most if not all of your data and move it to the new hard drive.
