Has anybody tried the new Firefox, version 29? It appears that they have made some radical changes, and I have seen reports that there might be a steep learning curve to get used to it. Should I try it?

I tried it and didn't like anything about it. Way different but others might like it. Went back to the old one.

Thus far, I'm not really seeing anything terribly different about it; it's fine by me, though.

I've switched to the ESR "Extended Support Release" version of Firefox, which keeps the old Firefox interface but gets security updates.
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/

I can't stand the new interface on the current Firefox. There are reasons I don't like Chrome, and Mozilla seems to be trying to make the new Firefox look and operate like Chrome.

If they "update" the ESR version so it has the same gawdawful interface as the current regular version Firefox, I'll be looking for a new browser.

I'm with Marian. I'm not seeing a lot of difference and it's working just fine for me.

The differences depend on whether you configured the previous version to look like the versions before that -- with download box, Properties, Menu always displayed, toolbar icons with "stop" and "reload" icons to the left of the address bar, etc. -- the way you've had them for years and where you're used to finding them. They've removed configurability with the new version. Whether you're OK with the changes depends on what you started out with and whether you're content to go digging deep into submenus to get where you want to go instead of going there in a couple of clicks.

Apparently there are addons that can replace some of the options they removed. Firefox used to be great for configurability of the user interface, but they've removed all that. Eventually you need so many addons to get it the way you want it that it makes more sense to use something else.

I've been using Firefox since before it was called Firefox. It was called Phoenix, then Firebird, then finally Firefox. You can see how it looked here

Hasn't Firefox moved to the Blink engine that Chrome uses?
Opera has moved away from their custom built Presto engine and gone to Blink in versions 15 and up, too, and it has generated a lot of complaints from those who really like 12.
Among other things, bookmarks are gone or have been altered radically in a new thing called Stash, you have to relearn the browser, I've read, and mouse gestures have been reduced.
I'm really not very clear about all this because I'm sticking with version 12.17 (an update to 12.16 Opera made for stability and as a concession to us fossils, I suppose) but if Firefox is using Blink now, that may be the source of your disgruntlement.
(Fun word I seldom get to use. grin)

Gil.

I haven't checked the new Opera, but thanks for the warning.
It wastes everyones time when they do "updates" that dispense with things people use often, like bookmarks, or change the whole browser around so you can't find them or so it takes several clicks and searches longer. Relearning a whole new user interface isn't something most people want to have to bother with.

There are a bunch of new things at the top on the right in Firefox 29, but I don't use them. I have the Menu Bar option enabled at the top of the page, so just continue to do things the "old" way! I guess the new stuff is there if I want it - which I doubt will happen - but I'm very glad they left the old stuff there too. I've definitely noticed the new version is much speedier.

And "disgruntlement" is an awesome word! We came up with a new word down at the Rescue Ranch today - stompled. We were talking about how one of the horses is going to run right over you if she is in a bad mood... so a combination of trampled and stomped was born!

You can still get Opera 12xx, Jenny, in case you want to try it.
For all I know, the newer version is fine for those who use and like it.
I'm just a stick in the mud. grin

My thoughts exactly about this new version of Firefox. wave

Some of the addons that restore features they removed
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/downloads-window/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/element-properties/?src=search
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/?src=search

And that doesn't even include digging down to restore what remains of a menu (they've removed some features from the menu), looking up how to restore the Stop and Reload buttons, etc. Or downloading updated versions of add-ons you used before that don't work with the new Firefox -- assuming those updated add-ons even exist, re-configuring the new add-ons, etc.

Such a waste of time to get back what was working before you "updated."
Too bad they can't do security updates without leaving the UI alone.

Another thing that they have removed is the ability to quickly and easily turn off Javascript. Normally this is not an issue but occasionally you can get trapped into a site that abuses Javascript like it won't let you leave the page without turning off Javascript or killing Firefox. Likewise, you can encounter a unresponsive script that locks the browser. There are a number of extensions that let you control scripts, but many of them are more than what you may want. Immunity is an extension that adds a button to the add-on bar that lets you turn Javascript on or off with a single click.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/immunity/?src=api

I, too, have been using Firefox since Phoenix when it came in a zip. I am disappointed in how heavy handed the developers have become. They have a vision of where they want FF to go and to hell with the longtime FF users. I am coming closer to giving up on it.

I've already gave up on Firefox after using the thing for years. For those of you who still want Firefox the old way try Sea Monkey. It is Mozilla based using many of the old Firefox features and is compatible will Firefox add ons.

Sea Monkey

I'm primarily using Comodo Dragon which is Google based without the Google intrusions. Comodo is the one who offers an excellent free firewall. They also have Ice Dragon Browser which is Firefox based and very security conscious. In fact it may be a safer option than Sea Monkey.

If you are fed up with Mozilla's attitude then try Ice Dragon it is built on the firefox engine with superior security and is compatible with FF addons

Ice Dragon

Comodo Dragon

Comodo Dragon has an icon on the top right of the browser call Priv Dog. It reports threats it blocked from the site you are presently visiting. You will see a number in red on top of the icon giving you the count of attempts from the loaded site. Change to another site and the number drops to zero and you can watch it climb as the garbage starts to pile up.

I'm currently using it now and the threats are numbered Zero on this GB site. Just so you guys know no crud from GB Thanks Mods.

If you click on that icon it shows a drop down list of what they call threats and who they are. I have not checked out Ice Dragon and its Firefox engine to see if it has Priv dog. The Dragon is far superior to that spyware known as Google and runs faster without it.
