The game installed with no problems on my xp but when I click on the desk icon all it does is restart the computer. Anyone have any ideas about this? thanks Judy

Sorry! For some reason, I was thinking you had gotten a new computer! Must have been thinking of someone else. I need a wet noodle on that one, Gil!

Before you uninstall and reinstall, right click on the icon and see what the "target" is.

There are three targets.
Target type: application
Target location: Dracula 3
Target: "d:\Microids\Dracula 3\Dracula3.exe"

Are you sure about that?
As far as I know, only 32-bit XP had an SP3.
The latest service pack for 64-bit XP is SP2.

Anyway, have you tried running it in compatibility mode?
And is it a disc version or a download?

It's a disc version. I tried all compatibility modes. By the way, I went to GOG. They have a Dracula trilogy: Resurrection; sanctuary; & path of the dragon. All three for 2.99. It says it works on Win 7 or 8. Has anyone tried the download?

o.k. Jenny; I had a DUH! moment. I have my xp & my win7 hooked up to one monitor. I gave you the win. 7. forgot to toggle back to the xp. The xp is: xp professional 32 bit. service pack three. I make mistakes like that often now, because I don't want to go on line with the xp, so I forget to toggle back & forth. sorry.

So, the target looks OK - I was curious why it would cause your computer to reboot. I played this game on both XP and on 64-bit Windows 7 and it played fine. It won't play on my Windows 7 now because it doesn't like my new video card. I've played all three of these from disk, so haven't tried the download.

Maybe Jenny or Inland will have some ideas about why clicking on the gameplay shortcut would cause your computer to reboot.

Well, Lord have Mercy!! I tried it on win7 2000 compatibility mode, & it worked. I never would have thought that would work. I want to thank everyone for all your help; I've been loading all my older games mostly on xp. I'm trying to get it all done because some need patches & I don't like going on line too much because it's not protected anymore. I only have time to do a few a day, because hubby just got home from the hospital after having surgery for colon cancer. He's not in great shape & needs a lot of caring. Again thank you.

I can't remember, but I think I had to use some kind of compatibility mode on Windows 7 too. I'm so glad you got it running - it will keep your mind off things for a little while anyway. I went through the same surgery with my husband, and the first week or so were kind of rough. Hang in there!

I hope your husband recovers soon, Judith.
Glad you got the game working.

Hi. I am guessing that this game won't play on Win8.1 . I installed it, tried to install Directx 9 (?) but it said it was not compatible with my version of windows.

GOG offers this as a download bundle along with Dracula: Resurrection and Dracula: The Last Sanctuary and it lists Windows 8 as one of the supported operating systems. I'm not sure what tweaks are involved, though.

I have the disk and decided to replay it but looks like I won't be able too.
Thanks,
Terri

GOG usually does the tweaks for you. Often you find they use "Run as Administrator" and some compatibility mode in the shortcut. I guess you could test those and see what happens.

You will need to have DirectX 9.0c installed for most older (pre-Vista) games to work. One person in this Neowin thread who was having issues installing DirectX 9.0c on Windows 8 got it to work by installing it in Safe Mode.

The web installer is here

The redistributable version is here

Here are instructions for getting into Safe Mode on Windows 8

Thanks Jenny. I thought I would just uninstall it but I will give your ideas and links a try.

Judith. Just saw your post about hubby having surgery. I hope he will be ok.
Take care of yourself too.
