Yes, that's my only gripe with Win 7. Some of my favourite older games refuse point blank to work with it. I no longer have my XP machine as back-up, so you're fortunate.

I've got so many old games I hate to forget about them. I don't play them all the time but once in a while. At least I can play them if I want to.

That's odd; we should investigate this. I don't know anyone who has bought games from GOG that has consistent trouble getting them to run on Windows 7 (apart from the Overseer problems, and that gave folks problems when the game was first released years ago). That sounds like maybe a firewall or user account control problem. You may need to adjust some settings.

There should be very few old games that don't work on Window 7. It may take a little tweaking, but I got virtually all of them to work with the exception of 16-bit games. And that isn't the fault of Windows 7, but because most computers use 64-bit Windows 7 to take advantage of increased RAM. If a GOG game advertised as working on Windows 7 is having a problem, then you need to contact GOG because they have already applied any fixes needed for the game to work on Windows 7.

Windows 7 does everything XP did and so much more. It just takes a little time to find out where to find everything. I highly recommend using the Help tutorials you can find in the Start menu. They are really helpful and full of information.

Just a couple of games wouldn't run but I will take some me time and try a bunch of them. Also I tried two games from GamersGate and they wouldn't even start. Maybe with this new pc I'm not giving the games a chance. I played A little of Overseer but couldn't get sound all the time. A few times I could.

Believe it or not, but there are a few older things that will run on Vista or higher that XP broke. The main obstacle to older games on Win7 is most have the 64-bit version (which is generally more stable and allows for more RAM) which does not work with 16-bit games. Otherwise, it has pretty good backwards compatibility. The main issues with 32-bit games is, more often than not, more because of depreciated parts of DirectX or other APIs.

There are a lot if resources to get many of the ones that have trouble on Win7 to run properly, or at least adequately, from modern engine ports to fan made patches. You just need to know where to look.


Overseer uses the Intel Realistic Sound Experience for its audio. Often the installer can have trouble on newer systems. Open "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\RSXCONFG.EXE" and run the diagnostic to see if it is installed and active. Again, I am shooting in the dark as I do not have the GOG version and cannot say how they dealt with some of the known problems.

Funny when Tex is in his office alone with nobody around he is talking and I have sound I can hear him. When he uses the video phone I can hear everything. When other people are with him I get no sound.

While there is an RSX.DLL present, there is no RXRCONFIG.EXE in the GOG version. Unfortunately the only VM where I've installed the game is under Windows 95 - no SYSWoW there

Then it would be "C:\Windows\System32\RSXCONFG.EXE" without the x64 redirection. Might help to install RSX separately.

Yes, that's where the executable is located in Windows 9x, there should also be a Program Item under Intel RSX 3D if its installed.

So many things change with these older classics and newer versions of Windows - it makes life so much fun
