The list 2008 - Closed!

Hi all,
Is it really the 9th time?
To recap, about 9 years ago I first discovered that there were advenure games, and that I liked them, but that no one else I knew did. Then I discovered GB, and realised there were plenty of tragics just like me More than that, I discovered there were so many games I had never heard of.
So what was worth searching out and what wasn't? The best source of information were all the other Boomers, so I started a thread, which became a list and the rest as they say is history.
The aim of this thread therefore is to compile a list of adventure game recommendations from the collected wisdom of everyone here.
The method is simple. You list 20 games you would recommend to someone looking for opinions on which games to play. They might not be your own top 20 games but they might be. You might decide instead to recommend a cross-section of styles or types, from all the games you have played. You might not recommend one of your personal favourites because your passion for the game is too much a result of your own idiosyncracies - not everyone likes 20 myst clones. You also might not recommend it because it is notoriously hard to get running on anything later than an abacus, scummv and dosbox notwithstanding.
But there is no rule that says you can’t; it is entirely up to you.
No game is excluded, if it meets the criteria of being an adventure game. We all know what that is when we see it, so don’t get too hung up on the detail.
There are some rules though:

1. Except for the special devilchili bonus, you can recommend a maximum of 20 games. You can choose to recommend less.
2. You cannot recommend a series with one recommendation. If you want to recommend all the Tex Murphy games, that will take 5 seperate recommendations, one for each game.
3. Myst and RealMyst will be counted as one game.
4. Uru and its add ons will be counted as one game.
5. BadMojo and the Redux version are one game.
6. Directors cuts will be counted as the same game.
7. Adventure games only please (Dark Side games get their own list later).

Special bonus - if you list them alphabetically, you can list an extra game (ie you get 21 recommendations)

The thread stays open for about three weeks, and I will post intermittent updates with gratuitous comments. I count as we go so please try to avoid editing your recommendations once you post. And as I say every year it is compulsory to get more posts than the year before.

Hi all,
There are only 2 votes in it for most recommended at the moment, with Syberia just ahead of TLJ.
Series votes sees the original Myst the most favoured in that series, the first Broken Sword leading the way, and GK2 narrowly edging GK1.
11 seperate Nancy Drew games have been mentionedand recent releases are doing well.
Notable ommissions thus far might include Shadow of Memories, Dark Fall 2, Realms of the Haunting and of course .... The Scroll

Heidi, you listed Mysterious Journey 2 - Schizm.
The makers confused everyone with these titles; only the Atlantis series was more muddled.
In any event, Schizm was the original game and number two was Chameleon. So can you post here (don't edit, I might miss it) and let me know which one you meant?

Hi flotsam, Shadows of Memories is one game I keep forgetting about & was determined to include in my list this year!

I've gone back & edited my list, it really is a game that's worthy of being included - I hope that's okay! I posted early to avoid the need to rush anything & my post is on page 3. I've let GK2 go to make room for it but GK2 will do okay without me!

Hi all,
One week to go! Numbers are a bit down on last year, which is not allowed so keep them coming.
Its neck and neck for most recommended between those perenial favourites TLJ and Syberia.
Oldest game voted for is Adventure aka Colossal Cave, originally in Fortran but available on line in different formats; anyone loaded this recently?
Newest games include Jack Keane, Art of Murder, Belief and Betrayal and Perry Rhodan, not all of which are locally available as yet (depending on your local-ness).
Looking back to the first list, there were just over 40 games with more than 2 recommendations, and of those, only Callahans Crosstime Salloon and Outcast (which now tends to appear on the darkside list) have not been mentioned. We do have more choices now, so we don't have to bump quite so many to put the newer games on, but I don't think its stretching the point too far to claim that it shows that a good game is still good game quite a few years later. Not everything relies on the latest graphics and processors to be appealing.
