Couldn't alter the config file because it wouldn't let me save after changing it.
If the file is "read only," you'll have to change that attribute before editing the file. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and look for a checkbox for "read only" on one of the Properties tabs (I think it's the "General" tab).
I do have a SoundBlaster sound card so I doubt that's the problem.
It could still be a driver issue that could be fixed by setting a generic sound card in the config file.
