Good to hear your thoughts about the game, Gil. How long would you estimate that it took you to play?
I'm not really sure, Marian.
I'd estimate a week, putting together all the broken bits of time.
Believe me, I'd still be playing and stuck in one of those mazes if the walkthrough hadn't gotten them right!
More thoughts, since I just looked again at flotsam's review where he says: "Once I worked out that I could substitute keys to choose my action icons (walk, run, sneak, look, talk etc) rather than having to constantly click the menu bar I was more comfortable, and even more so with the music turned off. More tweaks got rid of the subtitles, and my excursions outside the gaming window got less and less as I approached the edges with far less vigour. Getting a map helped too, as there was no longer the necessity to wander through screen after screen."
If you have a mouse with a middle wheel, you don't need to click on the menu bar to get look, talk, etc.
For run, walk, sneak, yes, you do have to use the icons on the menu bar or keys, but as a Sorcerer I used them so seldom that it didn't bother me.
What I really don't get, though, is the complaint about clicking "outside the smallish game window".
Smallish?
Outside?
The game plays fullscreen for me.
As for difficulty finding an exit on occasion, heaven knows I had that problem lots of times in the old King's Quest games!
Roehm did refuse to walk through an exit now and again until I moved him in the wrong direction a bit
but I had very little trouble with getting from one room to another.
She who reads subtitles,
Gil.
