Inspired by the Map or No Map post.

In some game series you have some kind of small creature, a dog, a baby dragon for example. In older games it always just with you but in some of the newer games you can choose not to take it. Anybody ever not take it? Presumably you get some other way of reaching the items Elf for example would get for you.

Currently Playing:
Adventure Game: Broken Age
Darkside: Star Wars: The Old Republic

I like the helpers too and have never opted not to take them.

I enjoy having a sidekick if it adds a bit of challenge to the game, like if they don't jump up and down and telegraph it to you, but you have to learn to think outside the box and use them for appropriate actions. I played one game where I had an owl, and enjoyed it. If the sidekick is too cutesy, though, that puts me off, especially if it is a grim game, otherwise. The sidekick needs to be "in character."

I've not played one of the games yet where you can choose to take it or not so I'm not sure what I would do if I had that option. I guess they're okay, but if I'm not cued to use it, I forget!
