Inspired by the Map or No Map post.
  In some game series you have some kind of small creature, a dog, a baby dragon for example. In older games it always just with you but in some of the newer games you can choose not to take it.  Anybody ever not take it?   Presumably you get some other way  of reaching the items Elf for example would get for you.

I enjoy having a sidekick if it adds a bit of challenge to the game, like if they don't jump up and down and telegraph it to you, but you have to learn to think outside the box and use them for appropriate actions. I played one game where I had an owl, and enjoyed it. If the sidekick is too cutesy, though, that puts me off, especially if it is a grim game, otherwise. The sidekick needs to be "in character."
