I was hoping to get some feedback on this game -- has anyone played it? It's on sale right now and I was thinking of grabbing it.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I've played the first one and found it a decent romp. RDR-2 looks to be pretty highly rated when checking reviews across the "Interwebs."

The thing that impressed me about the first one was the voice acting. I don't know how many folks were involved, but you hardly heard a voice repeated from an NPC (unless it was the same character of course), which added to the immersion.

Looks like RDR-2 went the same route from their listing in the IMDB, tons of voice talent. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6161168/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#cast

Fairly extensive cast for a western themed vid game. Even they (IMDB) give it a 9.7 out of 10.

I feel a lot more like I do now, then when I first got here

My son has played it through twice now and absolutely loves it.

The PC version would be a good one for testing out your laptop. smile

That's what I was thinking.

EDIT: Nope. It's a no-go. I have the dreaded game-not launching-issue that so many people seem to have. I spent all afternoon looking for solutions and in the end just asked Steam for a refund.

Too bad. I've wanted t play this game forever, but it's not going to be. I'll get something else.

So the game I decided on was Death Stranding, which has great reviews and seems like it might be a good one.

I did not even know there was an issue with the Red Dead Redemption 2 on Steam. That's a shame. My son played the Playstation 4 version.

Enjoy Death Stranding. I've heard good things about it.

Just out of curiosity - did you see both of these fixes on Steam for the RDR 2 not launching issue?

Quote
I was able to run RDR2 from steam for a while but then after a while it would only start the Rockstar Games Launcher. I could not run GTA5 either. The solution that worked for me was to close Steam completely, launch the Rockstar Games Launcher and click "Play on Steam". Log in with your Steam credentials and the game should run. Cheers.

The other one was:

Disabling the iGPU in device manager was the fix for me.

These two fixes (one or both) seemed to work for everyone posting in the Steam thread who was having problems getting the game to launch.

Yes, I saw those and myriad others. After about 4 hours I got too stressed and asked for a refund.

I might give it another go someday, but for now, it's on my naughty list.

Yes, I would give it another go at a different time. Maybe get it somewhere besides Steam, too. wave

So, my second purchase of RDR2 was more successful in that the game actually starts. I haven't delved in yet, but having a working game is movement forward. I'm looking forward to this one. Will keep you posted once I start.

I'm just starting to play RDR2. It's a fairly long game, very suitable for those under confinement, which is what I am. But it needs 100 gigabytes on a PC. That's fightening!

Another game that has a western feel, though not overtly, is The Witcher 3. It is set in a fantasy land with exotic monsters, sorceresses, and such. But there are many storylines involving making tough moral decisions in a war-ravaged land that hardens people's souls. That is very much at home in a western universe.

I need to get back into Witcher 3 this winter when I have more time. I will have to download again to the drive I'm using now. Had to abandon my old 1 TB Velociraptor and got a speedy new 1 TB Evo Pro SSD. GamingPhreak, I like your description of it with a Western feel. I think I'm also going to get RDR2 - it's been on my list for awhile. Let us know what you think, hagatha.

hagatha, is this going to be your inaugural game on the new Razor Blade?

Gardens put to bed for the winter. Time for some gaming!

Another game with a strong Western, down-home vibe is Fallout New Vegas. The dialog, characters, clothing, "attitude," etc. are clearly Western-inspired. Other Fallout games have similar traits here and there but not as obvious.

I started the game yesterday, just for a few minutes. It is really quite impressive. My Razer handles it without a hitch so far.

I won't actually get into it any farther just yet, and my brain is already bouncing from Death Stranding to trying to get all my Fallout 4 mods installed on the new laptop, but it definitely runs and it's definitely worth playing from what I can see.

I think you will enjoy the game very much. I did see part of it when my son was playing and it looked fascinating.

It opens in a blizzard and you soon realize that you are with a group of fugitives that seem to be on the wrong side of the law. Finding shelter, taking out a group of bandits, rescuing a damsel in distress. So far, so good.

I have now played and completed it. It would never run on my PC so I used Google Stadia instead, on its 1 month trial (free) and the game was on discount at £35, plus Stadia gave me an extra £10 off my first game purchase, so it cost only £25 which I'm happy with. It lives in the cloud and Stadia runs through Chrome so nothing is stored on my PC, don't need to update drivers, etc etc.

I play the game in first person, it is very immersive with different things going on and lots of random encounters. The landscapes are amazing. The weather is also very realistic although it's a bit odd that the stormy weather only lasts 1 or 2 minutes, never much longer than that. I completed the main storyline and a lot of the side-quest (stranger) missions in about a week of heavy sessions. Stadia doesn't work so great in the daytime but at night it is flawless. Like GeForce Now, I don't know that I'm streaming a game...on an ancient PC.

I've recently also played Witcher 3 but was just not enjoying it much. I was following the story and it kept pitting me up against enemies that were like 20 levels higher than me...just could not be arsed. I found the controls clunky and Geralt's actions would get blocked as he animates (ie standing up after being knocked over etc). RDR2 is much more smooth and dead-eye, should you choose to use it, is of course super-hero ability that makes things a lot easier, perhaps too easy. So I try not to use it and shoot people in real-time, and that's a lot of fun.

Red Dead (original) is probably my favorite game, so RDR2 is right up my alley. Performances, voices etc all very strong. I think I still like the story of RDR 1 that little bit more than RDR2's... but it is still very engaging. Understanding more about Dutch is great. Arthur is a good character. Seeing the "making" of John Marston of course is a treat. Seeing a bunch of New Austin locations (from the first game) is also nice.

Watching a show in Saint Denis, all you do is sit and watch, but for some reason I found it wonderful. A few moments in the game where I shed a tear cos it is a wild west wet dream...! But also cos there is some tragedy and brutality. I'm in the post-game (epilogue) now and there's still plenty to do and am working through some of the secrets/easter eggs etc.

So overall, I'm very happy with it -- and happy I also get to save 100gb HDD space by playing it on Stadia. No waiting for install, no real load times. Just press a button and you're in. I'll also be playing Cyberpunk this way (GeForce Now probably) and have played Witcher 3, Deus Ex, Jurassic World Evolution, Frostpunk and Rust this streaming way, with no (or very little, at peak internet times) disruptions. And even my internet isn't very good and I thought that would hinder my experience but it hasn't at all. Point is, I didn't think I'd like Stadia or GeForce Now. I was proved very wrong... they are kinda perfect for me, someone with an older PC with an ancient graphics card, not much HDD space etc.

So yeah, it's an exceptional game. It IS still a Rockstar game so some will already know the "limits" and the layout of mission types and mechanics etc. But it's deeper and more immersive than GTA 5 by a country mile, IMO. And if you can't play it on your own PC then give it a try on one of these streaming services, if you can afford that. I've replayed the original RDR about 4 or 5 times now, and I can imagine I will replay RDR2 again in the future - next time round I will probably play it with no dead-eye use at all (except for the few sequences where it forces it). I also avoided some things (camp-fires) so I can see what they are all about in a next playthrough. And like the first game, sometimes just trotting slowly through the land hunting animals is quite therapeutic!

A short followup as I have moved on from the story and played some Red Dead Online, the online element of RDR2, that now I believe can be purchased for less than £5. That makes it effectively a budget game so IMO worth it. I do not throw money at online games, I have enjoyed Star Trek Online without spending a penny (though I did buy one set of coins at like £8 as a sign of appreciation for getting a lot out of the free version). The same at this point with RDO I have not spent a penny and just worked through some missions to rank up and earn gold etc. Again I will probably buy one batch of gold cos again it's about £8. Point is you don't need to spend anything (except initial outlay if you are buying the individual product version) and you can still have fun. You get the large open world, though missions can become a little repetitive. You get the options of roles like trader, bounty hunter, collector which are quite fun to work on. I've only been working on Trader at the moment and have worked up my gold so I can later do Collector (and probably Naturalist in the long run).

PvP is mostly optional, you can go into defensive mode and focus on PvE stuff. I keep it off cos I like that air of risk, and hey occasionally someone comes out of nowhere guns blazing in your general direction. I don't mind, had some fun exchanges of bullets that way! But for the most part people are there to do teamwork which I like in an online game. If you join a posse then it is completely teamwork driven. If you're not in one then I suppose you mostly just pass people or observe them so not really teamwork there, but I mean that most players seem to be looking out for other players. I've done a hundred missions each with the potential for other players to attack (if you let the timer run down long enough) and only once or twice have any done so (incredibly, the first time, as a noob low level 5 or sth, I one shot headshotted the guy coming at me, he seemed mighty pissed after that lol, but I still completed the mission).

Now, I don't like GTA V online much (if at all) and I didn't like original RDR Online either. But I do like this. I thought maybe Story Mode would give me additional hours of things to do and fun to have but honestly, it hasn't/didn't. But I've found a good number of additional hours and fun to be had in the same world in the online element. I think you get a good secondary game in that. At first it feels a bit grindy, not necessarily daunting but definitely "why would I bother" but after a short while, interacting with other players, helping them and having them help me etc, I think I get it and think its worth recommending after experiencing that. Don't expect much story driven content there but in a way you kind of make your own story and if you involve yourself with other players you might find similar satisfaction in your sessions.

One note I play on Stadia so I think we have a slightly lower number in the online servers than perhaps consoles or Steam etc. Stadia players servers are predetermined and no way to switch or mix, I think. So I'm seeing a good number of the same players regularly, but clearly new players as regularly also. I don't see much griefing or problems, so am wondering if the Stadia server(s) are perhaps giving me a slightly more wholesome experience than you might have (if playing shared across Xbox servers, say). I'm interested to know how the "community" is for console and other servers etc but just wanted to note that the Stadia community are certainly a good bunch (for now...!).
