-1. You have two poles. One stands at 6ft. 6in, the other at 7ft. 7in.. From the top of each pole tie a string to the bottom of the other.

At what height do the two strings cross?

I will tell you that you have all the information you need, the distance between the poles would make no difference to the answer were it two feet or 200 feet.

-2. In a box you have 13 white marbles and 15 black marbles. You also have 28 black marbles outside the box.

You remove two marbles, randomly, from the box. If they are of different colors, you put the white one back in the box. If they are the same color you put a black marble in the box.

Continue this until only one marble remains in the box.
What color is the last marble? Please explain.

-3. My first is in sugar, but not in tea
My second in swim but not in sea
My third is in apple and also pear
My fourth is in ring and also hare
My last in ten but not in herd
My whole a very complimentary word.

What am I?

-4. A word square is composed of four words that read the same across and down. The first word has been entered for you. Complete the word square so that it uses, in total, four E's, 2 S's, 2 O's, 2 L's, 2 N's, 2 D's, 1 A and 1 P.

-5. What do trousers, braces, knickers, underpants and spectacles have in common that socks do not? (The answer is not the letter E)

Numbers 1 and 2 would have been right up Denis' alley!!!

Bernie, nice try but not my answer. Glad you're enjoying these. wave

OB, I do think of Denis whenever I post a math puzzle. We've still got manxman and several others who enjoy them. smile

5. You can have a single sock, but all the others are singie anyway. Not explaining it very well, "socks" is a plural, the others aren't think

A book fell on my head the other day. I only have my shelf to blame....

I may be way off base, but this is the only way I know to do the math... smile

1. (ht x ht) ÷ (ht + ht)

(78 x 91) ÷ (78 + 91) = 42 inches

2. Only one white remains.

starting with 13 white and 15 black
remove 2 white 6 times and there will be 1 white and 21 black
now remove 1 white and 1 black 21 times and only 1 white will remain smile

Sometimes lost is where you need to be. Just because you don't know your direction doesn't mean you don't have one.

2. One black remains think

HTML
3 − a2y*2 + (a1a3 − 4a4)y + (4a*2a*4 − a*2/3 − a* 2/1a*4) = 1 black

Manxman has it! The last one will always be white because whites can be removed only in pairs. wave

But I have to say that your formula looks very impressive, soot. smile

Soot, I see what you are saying. There is only one slight error that I saw. If you change the "3" to a "1" then you get 'white'. wave2
