"Have you ever thought a game was over before it was over" by esube brought another question to mind. I dont know if this was ever discussed here, But what game ending took you by surprise? Only one that I can think of, Syberia. Never expected it to end that way. It actually gave me chills and I started to cry with excitement. Did it affect anyone else that way? And what game can you think of that had a surprise ending?

I Baag, Therefore I Am. Update: I Don't Baag Anymore, Therefore I Ain't! Update: I'm baaging again but just a little.

I cried at the end of Syberia too. It is the first time that I have gotten so emotionally involved in a game ending. I'm glad to see that I am not alone.

The ending of Faust surprised me. So did Schizm. The "bad" ending of Obsidian was a surprise, although it made perfect sense.

I don't feel that Syberia ended. I felt I was just put on hold until the sequel.

On endings - Becky there were 2 endings to Obsidian, a "bad" one and a "good" one. I knew there were two (I needed a walkthrough at that point) so I played to get both.

On Syberia, I'm just glad I was by myself when the ending happened. There I am, talking (loudly) to the screen - "oh, no, hurry, you can do it!". you get the idea.

I never played Black Dahlia. One of the reasons was that I heard about the less than good ending. If I do a long game, with an immersive story, let's just say that the ending can't be a complete downer. Alternate endings are OK, but ond of the endings had better be a good one. Otherwise, I won't play.

I thought the ending of Syberia was sad..:-( Don't get me wrong, I was glad Kate made it to the train, but leaving the poor old guy sitting on the bench was sad! I thought he would/should have gotten together with the lonely singer..

Black Dahlia was a good game, til the ending!!

Tex Murphys "Overseer" that was the Pits!..of course they planned another sequel..but that was a bad ending, since I suppose that was the last of the series.. Glynn

Blade Runner was a surprise -it left me thinking for days. There are various endings, and some of it boils down to a moral judgement, and I've never had a game make me think about the ending for so long!

I think Colpet hit all three of my surprise endings. Syberia's wasn't unexpected - but it was amazing. I actually felt the most moved by Oscars statement towards the end. When all was said and done - I felt like cheering.

Black Dahlia was unsettling - but it was a dark story to start with.

Zork Nemesis definitely took me by surprise.

I also loved the end puzzle for Simon 3D - one of the most original mind blowing events I have ever seen in a game. I was completely and I mean completely amazed. Who'd of thought of this before. Defintely rewarded those who stuck through the painfully put together arcade like puzzles that were included in the game. laugh

Last but not least to me - The ending to the 2 game series starting with Legend of the Prophet and the Assassin left me in tears. Haunts me to this day.

Red Faction. But it wasnt good, it was like "what the ****". Already over??!!

And also, the ending for Realms of the Haunting is truly excellent, mindtwisting and extremely surprising. I sat and gaped by surprise for quite some time there.

The Neverwinter Nights ending surprised me in being to totally incomplete.

The ending in Thief 2 surprised me too, and made me yearn for a sequel.

Are they dead? Yes. Unlike you they have but one life...and they wasted it for your sake!

Laura, I had forgotten about The Prophet and Assassin. It had a great story line all round thumbsup
On another note, hopefully not everyone will avoid playing Black Dahlia because of the ending.
MSZV has the right idea, the game is immersive and pulls you right in. The ending makes perfect sense, since the game postulates on a real life unsolved mystery. smile

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Fable. It was a magical little game and nothing could have prepared me for the cruel whammy at the end. I sat speechless at the pc fully expecting the game to tell me it was fooling and then play the real ending.

The first No One Lives Forever had a great ending! And I mention that here because it had a good story and not too hard for a non action person like me.

Didn't we bring Hans with us on the train?

Hi Jill wave I had forgotten about the ending in Fable - guess I had blocked that one from memory, since I enjoyed the game so much up to that point!Oh yes, and that also brings to mind that Druid game, that I've even blocked the name of laugh

The decision or dilemma at the end was whether Kate was going to return to NY and her old life or go with Hans on the train. SO we went with the old guy or Hans. smile

Fable is THE WORST ending of any adventure game. Followed closely by The Cassandra Galleries and Rama.

That it did! I lost some enamel grinding my teeth in irritation. That ending and the one in CASSANDRA GALLERIES are the very worst endings by some measure of all the games I have played. The ending of BLACK DAHLIA was logical and there was still an out. Remember that the detectives were examining the movie projector as Jim Pearson was being led out and that film provided evidence on it incriminating for Dick Winslow and exonerating for Jim Pearson.

I liked the Reah ending though. I burst out laughing at it - thought it was really camp.

I think the image of the electric chair at the end of Black Dahlia left no room for doubt about what was going to happen to Jim. Otherwise why show the electric chair?

When a game I liked as much as I liked REAH ends up like that, "camp" does not come to mind. Your comment on the ending of BLACK DAHLIA is very interesting, since I didn't recall that electric chair image. I am going to have to go back and check it out. However, sniff, sniff, your logic has taken away my last hope, JENNY100. frown Tears are all that is left.

THE LEGEND OF THE PROPHET AND ASSASSIN is one of my favorite games. Like FAUST it had philosophical and ethical implications which enhanced what was already a good story. The ending was pensive, but appropriate.

Speaking of tears, they sometimes still come when I remember little Abby in THE BLACKSTONE CHRONICLES frown
