The last summons for jury duty I got was for Federal jury duty about 4 years ago! I would have loved to do it, but I would have had to drive an hour into downtown St. Louis every day for it. I had to testify for one of my cases when I was working at the Federal courthouse and the parking was a nightmare. The guy had a Federal arson charge after he set fire to his gas station just hours after I had done an inspection of his gasoline tanks. He was convicted and sentenced to 5 years. Four years ago, I had just had major surgery and got an excuse from my doctor to excuse me. It was accepted. Maybe you can get one too???

oldbroad, since you rely on public transportation, I wonder why that wouldn't be a good excuse for you? You have to way to get home? They can't expect you to sleep on the courthouse steps?!

A while back, I was getting summoned almost every other year, and ended up on two juries; a malpractice, and one with punitive damages from a fatal car crash. But were interesting, educational experiences in civil law suits, and both were in main federal building in downtown Chicago. The last summons I had was to appear at the criminal courts building, the world of harder criminals. I was scared about even being around that neighborhood and had no one to go with me, so my therapist wrote up an letter which they honored. Knock on wood, I've not been summoned since. Thank God.
Life's a puzzle; one piece at a time.

And they don't need to know that either. Just plead transportation issues and that you don't drive.

I thought they changed it from 70 to 65 here, but in re-reading it, one page says 70 and a second page says 65 so I am not sure. Maybe you have to go for possible selection until you are 70 but if you are between 65 and 70 you can then turn them down in person?? PS - I know you are not 70, but was not sure about the rules out there

Hi all.
Oldbroad, I wish I could help with your dilemma. I know how hard it is to have to rely on public transportation that isn't set up for more rural routes. In my days at York University, when I didn't drive and had no car, I was often left taking public transit late at night when I felt unsafe waiting for hours for a bus connection. At the time, York was at the very northern edge of Toronto and the bus service was infrequent. I'd come home from my part-time job downtown in the winter and it would be dark and very cold, and I would freeze while waiting. It's exhausting.
Finally, spring is really here. The garden is absolutely full of gormless young birds being fed. The nesting material I put up is torn to shreds, so there's nest-building everywhere.
I've been to the garden centre and bought some lettuces and a few wild currant bushes for the butterflies and hummingbirds. I'll put the currants on the south slope that fronts the water, so we can be entertained when we have a fire on the beach.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.
