Sunshine and above freezing again today. After our 12" of snow started melting, God said, "And let there be mud!"

One of the reasons we left Toronto was the winters and the aftermath of a snowstorm -- filthy, muddy melting snow, followed by a thaw, a freeze and then another thaw. Horrible for anyone taking the bus to work, with giant puddles of icy slush to step down into. I ruined many a pair of expensive leather boots that way. City snow is really ugly once car exhaust gets to it and the whole city was just one big grey mess for weeks on end sometimes. No thanks. I'll take our West Coast rain and gloom any day.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

hagatha, you remind me of the day I was trying to cross a street to catch a bus home, and when I raised my foot out of the slushy mess on my side of the street, my shoe stayed in it. I can't remember if the bus waited or left though while I dug my shoe out. Such fun times. laugh

Had an interesting day trapping a couple of dogs! These guys were dumped out here Tuesday night. We are out in the country, but we know who all the dogs are and where they belong. I am a member of a couple of rescue pages on FB and have some contacts there. I contacted a woman who does trapping and rescue locally and we set out looking for them as they had moved overnight looking for food. I directed her to the last sighting and there they were. They were both VERY big dogs and VERY aggressive - mostly protecting each other. Rebel tried to catch them, but no luck so set up her remotely triggered trap and baited it with cooked chicken. We quickly caught the German Shepherd, but the huge black one was having none of it. So we picked up the trap, dog and all, and took him in to the local Humane Society who had been given a heads up. They are bursting at the seams with dogs, so had to do some creative rearranging to find room for them. They we went back out and caught the second one quickly too. Good thing they were hungry! So a hail of daggers and fire on whoever dumped these two dogs and a big cheer for Rebel the trapper. They are warm and fed and after checking them for chips, will go to a stray hold and get any medical attention needed and be put up for adoption.

Bless your heart, Drac! I'm so glad you were able to get them to a safe place. I hope they turn out to be friendly, just scared so they can find homes.

Draclvr, I simply do not understand people who dump their pets. I guess animals are just things to some people.

It's wonderful that you were able to nab these guys and get them to a safe place. Hopefully once they understand that they don't have to fend for themselves they'll cam down and be friendlier.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

The German Shepherd settled right down as soon as he was in the trap. I think he's a very nice dog. They huge black one might take a little longer as he's so young and only felt secure when the Shepherd was there to protect him. They had to separate them at the shelter because they were so aggressive when they were together - you are all right - they were pretty much terrified. I'm just glad they are now being fed and cared for. These idiots who dump their dogs out here don't understand that we simply can't take care of all your dogs. They will be hungry, cold, likely shot or a coyote pack will kill them.

We had a very quiet day, but today our two cats were very friendly several times, bumping noses, standing together, and even allowing a tail sniff. They seem to hit a plateau for a while, and then Willow is a total jerk, they regress a bit, and then suddenly things are better than ever.

Tonight I'm roasting a cauliflower. The recipe calls for the whole head to be simmered in wine, water, oil and butter, plus salt, red peppe flakes and bay, and then roasted for 30 minutes in a very hot oven. It's also supposed to have a goat cheese dressing, but I'm going to use red pepper hummous instead because that's what we have in the fridge. I haven't been eating nearly enough vegetables lately and I have the waistline to prove it -- nothing fits and I feel like a blimp. The mirror is a like a horror movie that won't stop! scared mad

Time to get back to my regular, Meditteranean diet, the one I've followed all my life.

John, of course, is having beans on toast and fried eggs for dinner, since cauliflower is way too healthy. and he gets to eat what he wants.

I could very nearly live on roasted cauliflower or roasted brussels sprouts! I've dropped 20 pounds and want to work on another 20. This whole being over 70 with the metabolism to prove it is miserable. I try to get in at least 3 - 5 miles of walking every day, but I live in the country and my walking is down in the woods and around the barn. The snow and mud has not been conducive to walking lately! Can't wait for the weather to let up even a little bit.

I weighed between 115 and 120 until three years ago, and all of a sudden I started to gain. My doctor surmises that it's all the stress, plus of course the change in our diet to accommodate John's declining appetite. I've been fooling myself a bit but a few days ago I tried on a shirt that was too big five years ago and it barely does up now. Time for some serious dieting.

I was always a walker, too, even when I was working. Part of my portfolio was a group of buildings in Vancouver's West End, and I made a point of walking to them from the office instead of driving unless I had a lot of paperwork to take. I often walked through my lunch hour, browsing in stores and grabbing a smoothie. I really miss that. Sure, we can walk in the woods here, but I'm a city walker. I like to have a destination. Plus, it's not safe to walk in the woods alone here. Thre are bears and cougars, but I worry more about the human animals. We do have a great seawall here that the City is improving al the time, so there is that. And I have my bike, but because of my asthma I hit a plateau early on and have never been able to get past it. I can ride for 30 minutes at a middling resistance, and that's it I still ride a few times a week , but all that does is keep me from becoming a complete couch potato.
