I agree with you about Joe Hill... I need to look this book up.

This is my third reading of the Discworld series. The first couple of books aren't the greatest of the series but they do start the world-building. Some of the characters that run through the series are wonderful, especially a ratty little terrier that can talk.
And you really do need to read them in order as the various characters do have story arcs.

Marian, I had not heard about that. He wrote some wonderful books, and the AMC production of "The Terror" was amazing, for anyone who hasn't seen it.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I am enjoying the first of Jasper Fforde's zany Thursday Next yarns, but I am not sure that I would want to read a whole series, and I may even abandon this one unfinished with a view to resuming it later: very clever and amusing stuff, but perhaps an overdose for a full length book!

If you haven't read Jane Eyre, that one may not resonate as much as those that follow. It does have a good ending, however.
Right now my dream job would be driving a Zamboni over ice.

I did see it through to the end, easier reading once the story settled into the final theme and although I do not think I have ever read Jayne Eyre, my wife helped fill me in when necessary. I will definitely return to the series, but not immediately. I am now reading City of Stairs, another by the impressive Robert Jackson Bennett who may well be emerging as my current favourite author!

I just finshed three of my favourite Discworld books; The Night Watch, Monstrous Regiment, and Going Postal. He was a wonderful satirist, up there with the best. Such witty writing.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I have just finished City of Stairs: a brilliant and uplifting book, confirming that Robert Jackson Bennett is an excellent author with an astonishing imagination, and currently my favourite. I will now be moving on to the sequel, City of Blades...๐๐๐๐

Hope you like it! I have previously mentioned another couple of his books, TheTainted Cup and A Drop Of Corruption, also good fun.

I finished A Drop of Corruption, the excellent second book in Robert Jackson Bennett's Shadow of the Leviathan series. His writing grabs me, and I hope he continues with these characters of Anna and Din in another book (or two or three). When I came across an anthology of Shirley Jackson's works in one of my bookcases, I realized that I hadn't read it. There was a bookmark at the beginning of The Haunting of Hill House, so I started there, then proceeded to We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and finally read The Lottery and Other Stories. Jackson's stories mostly deal with human foibles, bad behavior, and fears. She is, for the most part, not a cheerful writer, but her writing is compelling nonetheless. Her short stories came out in the late 1940s and the two novels in 1959 and 1962 respectively, so the norms and expectations of the characters are often dated. Hill House was familiar to me because of the movie The Haunting, but the one that got under my skin the most was We Have Always Lived in the Castle because it has lessons that apply to today. Right now I just started reading Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell. I bought the book in paperback when I heard the movie was coming out, but it turns out I had already bought it in hardcover with a couple of her other books several years ago. The first book of hers I read was The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, which was terrific.
Right now my dream job would be driving a Zamboni over ice.

LadyK, all I have read of Shirley Jackson is The Haunting of Hill House, but she seems an excellent writer. I need to read We Have Always Lived in the Castle. I have also been eyeing this volume for a while and plan to read it eventually.
