I ran into a problem with the game crashing repeatedly in the same spot. I cannot get past it. Do you know if I will lose my saves if I uninstall the game and reinstall it to see if that might help? Or do you have some other suggestion?

If the game is crashing repeatedly in the same spot, I would suggest posting in the game forum at GOG before uninstalling. It depends on whether the game has local saves and if they will be wiped out by an uninstall or if the game saves are in the Galaxy app. Did you use Galaxy to download and install?

There's a bunch of things mentioned in GOG's technical support page for the game here.

Under general troublshooting, check out stability issues.

Drac, I did post on the game forum page but don't really expect to get an answer there. I installed through Galaxy but made a shortcut so I don't open the Galaxy. I do have a notation on my games spreadsheet that says I'm not sure if the game installed right or not so there must have been something that didn't go right during installation. I had that same notation next to the first Jack Keane game and I didn't run into any serious problems with that one.

There is a folder in my Documents that seems to be all of the saves.

Marian, I will check out that link shortly.

Thanks. I'll post back later.

Tried a few of the simpler things that the link shows then I uninstalled the game. Here's what pops up at 97% installation:

NVIDIA PhysX (Legacy)

The currently installed version of the drivers is newer than what you are trying to install aborting the installation.

Only option: Cancel

This is probably what happened before and why I made that notation on my game list. Cancelling does show the game "installed". Same crash.

I guess I may have to mark this games as not playable. Possibly I can figure out how to get it to my Win 7 computer and try it out there.

You might be able to copy that game saves folder to a flash drive and transfer it to the Windows 7 computer. I found some answers on the Steam support page for the game and it just seems that it's not compatible with Windows 10 and newer video card drivers. The only solutions offered are to roll back your video card drivers.

Quote
This error happens when the game’s installer detects that your system’s graphics drivers are newer than the ones it’s built to support. This is common with older DOS-based or DirectX 9.0c games like Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within, which may not be fully compatible with modern GPU drivers.

Why it happens
The installer checks your GPU’s DirectX version and driver signature.

If your GPU is newer than the game’s target (e.g., DirectX 9.0c with older shader model support), the installer aborts to prevent compatibility issues Steam Support.

First I need to figure out how to get the game on my Windows 7 computer. I tried burning the offline backup installer to a disc but it doesn't seem to work (very possible user error as I don't really know how to do this). It did take up disc space though and now I can't delete it off of there either.

And GOG shows it plays on Win 10 and Win 11.

Well, guess what finally kicked into my brain? I have this game on disc. I just now installed it on my Win 7 computer. Somewhere around here I have a disc that I used to transfer save files from one computer to another but I cannot seem to locate it just yet. I guess if I have to I can plug an external drive in to try to do that and see what happens.

Marian, I had seen that on Steam but my eyes crossed looking at it!

Yes, there was an information overload with that thread.

Good news about having the game on a disc.

woot I did not find my disc unfortunately. It has some saves on it I would like to keep and don't know if I backed them up anywhere else. I did, however, find a thumb drive that I managed to get to work to transfer my save files over and I did play just immediately (no further) past the crash area at which time the game auto saved and I also did a manual save then got out of the game. I do see the save in my saves folder so hopefully, I am good to go. I'm worn out now though!

That makes me exhausted just reading about it! I was hoping you had a thumb drive someplace - they are SO much easier to deal with than disks. Well, now you can play the game - persistence pays off again!

Not for me Drac. I prefer the discs. I've had a lot of trouble with the thumb drives and lost stuff. I really need to find that disc with the saves on it. I'm pretty sure that must be where I also have some game patches. I can't imagine where the darn thing is.

oldbroad - I just saw your replies in the What Are You Playing thread - it looks like you have the situation in hand !! Good for you !

Have you looked into using a USB "portable" drive ?? They are inexpensive and very useful for exactly this kind of issue. I use them to Back-up data bases, Movies, Photos etc etc and - I have a couple that I store all my games on !!

WD My Book is just one example of many. You can even keep in hooked up to your PC and use it as a Hard Drive as if it were inside the case ! Just my penny and a half :>)))

I love using a small portable drive too. You just plug in to a USB port and then drag and drop files. Super easy and some of them have huge capacity. Mine is 1 TB.

I have I think 3 thumb drives, only 1 of which seems to work. I never had much luck with them so was glad this one worked out okay last night. I also have 2 WD My Book external drives but I don't keep them plugged in. I just don't have the room. I try to take them out once in a while to back some files up but I'm a lazy person. It's hard for me to get to all the plugs. They're both pretty old. I was never very organized about how I used them and may one day purchase another one to try to organize things better.

The portable USB can't be beat for reliability and - like Draclvr said - they can store as much TBs as any internal drive.. in fact - they are internal drives in an external case ! You can also get a short USB extension cable -- plug it in and leave it on or next to your PC - very handy !
