I'm curious as to how many people have been playing adventures on platforms other than the PC, and what their impressions are of the experience.

Also, are people eager for news about adventure games for Nintendo DS and the Wii (for example)?

I played Zelda on nintendo before we bought our 1st PC a Pentium P90. Zelda led me to The Dig and the rest is history. Or maybe Zelda did not really count as adventure? What say you Becky?

Hi Becky, good subject. I've played adventure games on both the olde Commodore 64 and the Playstation 1 & 2.

I've played Maniac Mansion and an old Mastertronics game called Zzzz on the Commodore.

I've played DiscWorld 1 & 2, Broken Sword 1 & 2 on the PS1. I've played Myst Exile, Escape From Monkey Island and Dracula The Last Sanctuary on the PS2. To be perfectly honest I'd sooner play them on a console than on the PC.

Here's my take on why. Too many times people who couldn't afford to were forced to upgrade their PCs just to be able to play the newer games. Not everyone has the money for new Video Cards, Sound Cards etc, and even after the entire upgrade people still have trouble getting some of these games to work properly. My computer is fully loaded and I still have trouble with some games. IE, Broken Sword 4, I have a hard time manipulating my main character around, and it is totally annoying. This type of thing puts me off finishing a game.

On the consoles the only problem is the loading times are a little longer but only by a few more seconds. Which I think is a small trade off. Don't get me wrong I love my PC and wouldn't trade it for all the Wiis, PS2,3,4 or 9s. I just don't like having to stress out my joints just getting a guy to go through a door, and stress out my wallet in upgrades.

Not all games are like this but I wish that game makers would realize that not everyone can afford to upgrade their equipment every time there's a new game on the market. Well that's my two cents worth.

That game had very poor character movement. It's not your computer's fault.

Old Lady -- although the Zelda games have adventure elements in them (exploration, some puzzle-like challenges) they have a lot of action elements, so I would not consider them to be adventure games. They are a lot of fun though if you enjoy reflex-based challenges as part of the gameplay mix.

About 10 years ago I used to play games on nintendo...
Since I discovered the pc games...I will never go back to that kind of platforms..

I play adventure games on all the platforms I own. I enjoy Still Life on the Xbox as much as I enjoy Phoenix Wright on the Nintendo DS or Syberia on the PC, the platform makes no difference to me. It's the story and the puzzles that count. In fact I'm buying as many adventure games on non-PC platforms as I can find, even if I already own the game on PC. Both to make a statement to the developers ('we want more adventure games, the genre isn't dead') and because some of these games no longer run under XP (such as Discworld) and the PlayStation version will always keep working on my PS2.

I've seen a couple of promising titles on the Games Convention in Leipzig and I have a couple of older games (console-exclusive) I would love to talk about, but since there is almost no news on non-PC adventures on this site I'm reluctant to open a discussion topic about them.

I haven't played any console games at all but i will probably give And Then There Were None a try when it comes out on the Wii.

I have played games on X BOX,PS2,GAMECUBE,and the WII,I still play games on them. I myself prefer the older games the newer ones coming out aren't as good I don't think.

i have a PS2 but still play games predominantly on the PC.
I did though play Ico on PS2 as it was the only platform available, and if there was ever a reason to buy a PS2 that game would be one of them.
Which makes me kind of wonder what other games I might be missing. Probably if a game was reviewed as a "must play" and I didn't have the platform, I would investigate it.

Becky you're probably focussing on the consoles?

As a Mac user I'm interested in Adventure games for that platform.

I like to play adventures on the consoles--less chance that the game won't work.

I'm not picky about graphics so I don't mind the difference in picture, and it's much easier to share the experience with someone else.

For instance, My son handled the controls on IP (he has good reflexes) while I picked the dialogue choices or gave suggestions. I could enjoy the story line and really enjoy watching the fights because I wasn't having to do the clicking. We had a great time playing together.

Just can't justify the cost for consoles - and since I play to relax, I'm not into the fast reflex thing ,so PC is it for me.

I agree with you Becky. 13 years ago the fingers were fast but not now so I stick to using the brain and try to find games that suit me. Thats one of the reasons for taking part in Gameboomers as it helps me find suitable games and also its great to feel that you are talking with friends from around the world.

niteowl07, there are pure adventure games for consoles. No reflexes needed.
Once you own a console, you never need to upgrade it. No new graphics cards, no new hard drive, no new RAM or new version of Windows, nothing. The games will never stop working either.

I have a PS1 & 2 & have just about all of the AGs made for them e.g Discworld 1, 2 & 3, Dracula Resurrection & Last Sanctuary & the first 3 Broken Sword games - to name but a few!

One of the good things about playing on a consol is that (as mentioned earlier) you don't have to worry about compatibility/specs etc - you put the game in & it plays! Also the gamepad is a better option for some games e.g Indigo Prophecy. Also you can position yourself more comfortably!

The downside for me is that graphics look better on a PC than on the TV I have linked up to the consols - but hopefully in time I can buy a better TV!

I'm curious about something if someone could lend their advice. The Nintendo DS. I've seen quite a few adventure games for it on Gamefaqs, and they have a Nancy Drew game coming out for it soon. Hubby talks about buying me one, they apparently have a Brain Quiz game that's supposed to be a good brain exerciser. I'd rather have a new laptop so I can write my stories. I'm wondering if the DS will be worth getting, after the roof of course.

I have a DS and love it. Alot of times if I have to go somewhere were I am going to have to wait I take it instead of a book. I also play games on my Xbox and PS2 besides my pc. I hope to get a Xbox360 soon. Got a new computer w/Vista and am loving it.

just wondering... was there ever an adventure for snes? i know its an almost museum-like console but for some obscure reason i am so in love with it i just cannot part from it....

I have never played games on anything but a PC. However, this thread has peaked my curiosity about PS2s. Will ALL adventure games play on one? Or, would I have to buy certain games that are specifically made for a PS2? Lately, I've had problems getting games to run properly, if at all, on my PC (Paradise, BS4, AGON, etc)....even after getting a new graphics card. Would these be playable on a PS2? Would older games, like Gabe Knight 1, play on one?

I love playing adventure games but am getting tired of buying them only to have to let them lay on the shelf or having to shop for another new graphics card.

Cappy, you would need to buy a PS2 specific game. You cannot use PC games and play them on a console unfortunately. They do tend to cost more than PC games also.

Daikka, I believe Shadowgate was an adventure game I played on the SNES also Clock Tower was another one.

I'm not sure if all of them would play on a US console. They bring back a lot of memories. A few of those were ported over to the playstation and a couple of other console systems.
