Hi All,

Thanks for the good response, pleased if I brightened a few minutes of your time. Don't worry I'm not really going to take you to court for all your hard earned!

How am I typing this you may ask with a straightjacket on, well I'm using the trusty adventure gamers stick clamped in my teeth. ( Gamers Rule 1 Always pick up a stick when you see one ). It was hanging out of my backpack and I managed to pull it out.

I'm still trying to get out of the jacket so I can access my pack. It contains all the usual, easy to carry items, two buckets of water, a twenty foot ladder, an oil lamp, matches, three rocks, a metal lever, several "exotic plants" and a spade.

I was strapped into the jacket by a man with one leg called Pete, (he didn't say what the other leg was called), but he left me tied up in this room.

Level 7! don't make me laugh, live inside the adventure and enter a new dimension! (Now that's weird!)

Do you want to know how I get on and help me escape?

Love it, Gordon! I was just commenting on the above to myself the other night while playing Nibiru. I couldn't believe the stuff the main character was stuffing into his pockets. Don't want to list it because it might a spoiler but I think it has been the most bizarre inventory of all the games I've played.

Tried sierramindy's advice and used the stick to tip the buckets of water under the door.

Eureka! ----- Er no. Now I have two empty buckets , a wet floor, and a broken stick.

Its now becoming difficult to type with the shorter stick in my teeth as I bang my nose on the keyboard with each stroke.

By dose is gedding vewy zore dow, bud I mudst go on.

Hang on how does a sore nose change the way I type?

I think I can see a way to get out of the jacket. Is there still any interest out there?

How in the world do you untie someone with a rope? Or am I reading this wrong? Who am I to talk though since I got Gordon24 into a worse mess after he took my advice? Although I did only mention one bucket of water. BTW, do straitjackets tie in front or back?

Straightjackets as far as the ones I've seen don't tie sierra, they buckle only.

I've had a really long day ! LOL !

So jackets are buckled, not tied, interesting. Does make things harder. Are the buckles plain like on belts, or do they have locks like handcuffs and need a key?
Methinks by the time Gordon24 is dragged through the water and then unbuckled from the jacket he may have lost his sense of humor. Hope not.

Alas my wife cannot help me. She has now given up all hope and abandoned me forever to the world of intrepid adventure. I seem to be alone in this building.

I have had a good look around the room since we last talked (typed?), while I can still see past my keyboard induced, ever-swelling , throbbing nose.

I am in a dilapidated kitchen. It contains several cupboards and drawers, a sink with a dripping tap, and a functioning freezer cabinet. I've tried opening things with my teeth, but I am weak through lack of food, my teeth are tired with typing, and my nose gets in the way.

There is a festering waste bin a in a dark corner from which issues a rustling sound at times, and once I am sure I have seen the reflection in a pair of beady eyes staring at me.

One of the work surfaces has the remnants of some spilled fruit preserve on it which is beginning to go rancid so I'll pass on this to salve my hunger.

I metaphorically "click" on the preserve.

CUT TO VIDEO SEQUENCE (How did I do that? This is for real!)

I shuffle to the bench and manage, using deft acrobatic skills, to rub the preserve onto the buckles and straps behind my back securing the jacket. (So that's why I cut to video, I could never have done that in real life) I move over to the corner by the waste bin and kneel with my back towards it.

A large rat issues from the bin and in his eagerness to eat the preserve (do rats have a sweet tooth?) chews through the straps.

BACK TO REAL ACTION

Ha ha! I wriggle free of the jacket at last and run to the door. All together now the next two words are ----.

It's locked!

Where next? What next? How? Does anybody care?

I can easily think of 2 meanings for "thickness of the thread" and I'm afraid to ask which one you could mean! Oh well, first of all, now that your hands are free, you will need to get something to eat so I hope there is something there in one of the cupboards. (The "Breakfast of Champions" cereal would be good.) With the dripping tap you will be able to get water anyway (now that you emptied both buckets) and that's important because one can live longer without food than without water. (And after dry cereal you might want some water!) About that locked door, maybe after becoming a champion you might break it down? Use a fork to pick the lock?

Soon you may start to hear amysterious voice that says "I can't use that now"

This thread is now getting mightily thin.
Maybe its time to be thinking of packing it in.
Just the odd person is now adding to it.
I'm beginning to wonder just why I still do it.

I've been seeing this thread as a truly "interactive" text adventure game. However, it turns out there is one big flaw in that notion: Not too many are interested in interacting, are they? So be it.

Ooooh Kaaay! It seems there's a little life left here yet.

Sierramindys got it just right, that's where I intended it to go after the good response to the initial e-mail. This is supposed to be an adventurers forum after all!

Recap for new passengers.

Backpack contains: Two empty buckets (Thanks SM!), oil lamp, matches, three rocks, 20 foot ladder, several exotic plants (now wilting somewhat), a metal lever and a spade. The stick has now mysteriously disappeared as all good, used items do.

Lets explore. I examine the door, but cannot see much.
I use the matches with the lamp, and the lit lamp with the door. I can see a key in the other side of the lock (Isn't there always?) How to get it?

I find an apron on a hook by the door. I "click" on this and begin wearing it.

I check out the freezer - Cold, but empty.
I check the first drawer - It's empty
I check the second drawer - It's empty
This is just wasting time!

I check all the drawers and cupboards, and find: Two empty cereal boxes with teeth marks on them - "Breakfast of Champions" (that rat will eat anything. It even has a Government health warning on it!) and "Shredded Wit" (something I could do with now)

Possibly of more use is: a kitchen knife, a ball of twine, an electrical extension cord, a large plastic bag, a half empty container of cooking oil, and a cook book with nice large pages. (Hint I think! Don't be disappointed yet Nickie!)

There is also a 14 pound sack of rotting potatoes which I also put in my pack. (No use whatsoever to my quest, but you can never carry enough ballast in your backpack!)

I see my reflection in the steel door of the freezer and decide that with the frilly apron on I do not look in any way butch enough to be a fearless adventurer, so I take it off again and consign it to the rats bin where it thankfully does the decent thing and disappears.

Back to the door. Nothing I have will go into the keyhole as its too narrow, except for the twine. However this is too flexible to dislodge the key.

Time for us all to think!

If the locked room is in an old house, there might be a transom above the door. Use that trusty ladder that intrepid adventurers all seem to have in inventory, climb to the transom, push or pull to open it. If it has a lock it will be on the inside, like on windows, so easy to open. Climb out the opening and use the sack of rotten potatoes to cushion your fall. Happy landing!
However, the chances are that I'm just wishful thinking about that transom, which means I haven't been much help, doesn't it, but no one can say I didn't try!

Can you whittle something with the kitchen knife out of a potato to push the key out of the lock. And slip a page from the cookbook under the door for the key to land on. Then pull the page with the key back under the door to your side. Use the key to open the door....FREEDOM!

Great stuff! Now we're starting to cook. (No not the potatoes!)

As far as the potatoes are concerned they are too rotten and soft to be whittled into anything. They don't smell too great either!

I take a page from the cookbook and try to slide it under the door, but the floor is too wet with all the spilled water. I need some way to get the floor dry.

I'm also becoming dizzy through lack of sustainance.

Hint -- Maybe I can solve two problems at once.

Why not cut a piece of string, dip it in the oil then freeze it to make a stick to poke out the key? Will the plastic bag slide under the door?

At this point in the adventure I'd log onto GameBoomers pull up the walkthrough, and be done with it. Guess I'm no fun huh? Well good luck on getting out of the locked room.

Usually my style too thracia. If there was one I'd be peeking right now.

But since there's not....I have some ideas but they're not very pleasant. Are you talking about using the rat somehow Gordon? I mean, you could lure it out with those rotton potatos and, assuming it came out with the apron, you could use that to dry the floor. Then after that, along the lines of needing to eat, surely you're not talking about eating the rat, huh? But if you did eat the rat you could use one of the its bones to push the key through. If this is the case, then this game must fall into the horror category.

What about the man with one leg called Pete? Does he come back maybe?
I think you have a good idea, zookeeper, about eating the rat. Use the matches to light the cook book pages and roast the rat after killing it and skinning it with the knife. In these dire circumstances it might even be tasty!

Probably tastes like chicken.

I bet dinner parties at your houses are a gastronomic delight.

We are making progress however.
The rat and the apron have departed to the great backpack in the sky, and are no longer available, and the man with one leg called Pete has hopped it.

The plastic bag will also not slide under the door due to the wet floor. We must work out how to dry it, with the apron being gone. What have we in the backpack that is gasping to soak up water?

I like old lady's idea, and use the knife on the twine and soak a length in the oil as suggested. I put it in the freezer but the oil only turns to grease when it gets cold and the twine is still too flexible to move the key.

What else can we soak the twine with that will freeze hard?

So do you have enough twine to soak up the water? Then a piece of that could be frozen and pushed through the keyhole.

Now wait a cotton-picking minute here, our hero Gordon24, according to his own words, was "becoming dizzy through lack of sustainance" (page 6) and then, weak with hunger he throws out a valuable source of protein? Not me, but then my favorite foods are chocolate and peanut butter so what would I know? I'm also lucky enough to have a husband who does the cooking except when we eat out, but he doesn't play adventure games so I can't get him to help us out.

I presume there isn't a window so there MUST be a ventilation shaft (leading to a maze of course - once you have prised off the cover off and removed the fan) ??

I looove this thread. Lets be radical here and put everything that is flamable eg cook book etc by door pour on oil set it alight and hid in freezer, being careful not to get locked in, while the door burns down. Freedom!

I click on the twine and on the water on the floor.
"I can't use that here" says a voice (Thanks for that ramona! A good way to dispose of a sensible suggestion that doesn't fit my devious plot) However I like the frozen string bit.

Back to the rejected rodent diet. I have a soft spot for rats since I spent several miles on the "Road to India" with one once. I got to quite like him, and the beggar was very hard to catch anyway.
Now if it had been a nice fluffy bunny or a puppy dog instead of a rat, then bring me my knife and fork. (There I hope that has sickened you off the rat once and for all!)

Eating the cookbook? A novel meal! (sorry thats an awful joke - even for me!)
I can imagine -- RECIPE 1 -- Take this book and simmer gently for two hours. There would be no need for a recipe 2 as you would have eaten it making recipe 1.

Sorry no dumb waiters, (just me the dumb writer). No secret passages, trap doors, or anything else other than what has already been noted.

I DO NOT carry grappling hooks anymore. I always used to carry one in my copious trouser pockets until I sat down carelessly one day. -- Say no more.

Despite groans of disappointment I will return eventually to the frozen twine, but I must get the floor dry first so I can catch the key on the other side.

I take another look through my inventory. Everything is in order except for the exotic plants they really are beginning to look worse for wear. I wonder what would help them recover (Large hint!)

I know, I know, but I'm not going to say, I'm still hung up on the rat, which I bet does taste like chicken. However, one can't eat a friend, I reckon. So, I'll expand on the hint and just say that exotic plants need water.

Ta Raaa! A fanfare of trumpets for sierramindy.

I use the plants with the water on the floor. They are so thirsty that they avidly suck up all the water until the surface is bone dry. Refreshed they immediately bloom and produce the most succulent of fruit. I take and use this and am hungry no more.

I tear a page from the cookbook and slide it under the door and use the knife to cut a length of twine.

I use the twine with the dripping tap, and the wet twine with the freezer.

I take the frozen twine to the door and -- Oh! By the time I get to the door the twine has melted again and is no use in pushing out the key.

I try this several times but no matter how fast I run I cannot get more than halfway across the (very large) kitchen before the twine thaws out.

What now?

Pull the leal apart, freeze the stem which would be full of water and try that as it may not defroast so quickly.
Edit or pull the freezer over towards the door - reducing the journey time

If you pull the freezer over, you may pull the plug out and no more cold. Oops.

Do have a question of course; once "we" help get you out of the room, which of course will happen, since Baag'ers are the ultimate at getting out of tight spots, then, "we" must help you escape the confines of "said asylum"? (delightedly rubbing hands together)

But back to the locked room...have you used the ladder to look on any and all high spots that may have ledges, for further useful objects?

A thought suddenly springs into my head! Can I turn up the freezer (but I don't know how you make ice colder than ice) I open the door but this is a very old machine and has only two settings on the heat dial ON and OFF. I decide to leave it ON.

The plants have taken great exception to me eating their young and have pulled up roots and slunk off into the dark recesses of the room. (I did say they were exotic!!)

I wonder if I can pull the freezer nearer to the door. It's a very large freezer though.
However I extend my manly frame to its full six feet three inches, flex my solid, well-toned muscles and apply my not inconsiderable strength to the task. I eventually with great exertions manage to get the freezer slowly moving. Gradually I ease it towards the door, the veins in my huge biceps pounding under the strain when suddenly

---BOINGGG!---

I immediately check my manly physique to see if anything has moved from where it should be, but all seems OK

What I do find is that the electric cord has stretched taut and the freezer won't move any further.

Still too far away.

I unplug the freezer and continue my endeavours. Eventually I reach the door. Unfortunately due to the feat of moving the freezer I have generated so much body heat in the room that the freezer has defrosted. This is not a surprise, as the sweat from my glistening black hair is still dripping from my square-cut chin and running down my heaving chest.

I catch my reflection again in the freezer door and see the weedy little runt I really am. Oh well if you can't boost yourself up a bit in your own adventure when can you? Still I bet I had the ladies going for a while.

I use the extension cord with the freezer and the electric outlet, freeze more twine and poke out the key onto the book page. Pull the page under the door, use the key and Open Sesame, leave the kitchen. The door slams closed behind my and won't reopen.

I am now in a small bare hallway. There is one metal door, with no keyhole. No windows, no secret passages, no dumbwaiters. All I can see is light coming in from a part open skylight high in the roof.

On a shelf by the door is what appears to be the most complicated key-pad I have ever seen.

Still following! My fingers need to stop for breath now.

Hmm, sounds like time to put that ladder you've been lugging around to good use. I say put it up and check out that sky light. There must be a dusty ledge up there where the last person stuck in this hallway etched the code to the keypad. Why a person would do that, I have no idea. But this is an adventure game afterall... :/

Since the keypad is on a shelf and not on the door or on the wall next to the door, does that mean it can be picked up? So, is it something to add to the inventory?

Dear Gordon 24, at this point the batteries in your mouse run out. There are no spares and the shop is closed. You try to "borrow" the batteries from the TV control and the childre start to scream. Your poor long suffering wife rushes in forgetting she has left the chip pan on the stove. The smoke sets off the fire alarm and both cats run to the catflap and get stuck. The neighbours ring the police and you show them this thread to explain what is happening. You are now back in your striaght jacket.

Oh my gosh Gordon, you are in trouble now. Yikes.

Personally, I do not see any long, suffering wife, but I do see one laughing her head off and wondering just how our intrepid adventurer is going to work his way out of this latest puzzle, which we gamers love. Yes, I think the ladder will come into play with the skylight, and I want to see what is up there! As for the keypad, maybe trying random keys will set off an alarm and help will come? Or not.

Sorry old lady, but I'm still unfettered, I don't want to got through all that again.

You mentioned a rubber chicken and a parrot a few posts ago. I once had a great idea for a money making exercise using a rubber chicken, well rubber cockerel actually, and a parrot that was accompanying me at the time.

Having been woken every morning by the strident screech of the rubber cockerel I thought what if we could cross the cockerel and the parrot. The cross bred cockerel offspring could then be taught to talk like their mother and instead of the raucous racket every sunrise I could teach them to sing Morning Has Broken, or Good Morning, Good Morning.
A much more pleasant sound to be woken by.

I duly crossed the rubber cockerel with the beautiful female parrot and all seemed well, but there was an unforeseen flaw in the plan.

Every time the parrot laid an egg it bounced so high, so fast and so far that I was never able to actually find one!

Back to the plot.

A bare hall, two doors both locked. Plain concrete walls, floor and ceiling (if you wanted fancy graphics buy a Benoit Sokal game!) The graphics in my adventure are so crude you could run them on an abacus.

The part open skylight in the centre of the ceiling attracts my attention. I deftly whip the twenty foot ladder from my pack
and attempt to reach the skylight. The ladder is six inches too short. (Why didn't I say it was a twenty-one foot ladder right at the start?)

I decide to try the key-pad.

There are dozens of identical small buttons across the top of the unit. Below that are what I assume are the keys.

There is a mysterious word BZNZSZ emblazoned across the top of the box. Is it a code as to how it operates.

I try a few of the buttons. I press one and a deep noise fills the room.

Boom! -- Boom! ------- Boom! - Boom! - Boom
!
This continues repeating over and over again. Nothing seems to happen to the door. I press a few more buttons, and various sounds add to the deep booming.

I begin pressing the keys below, and yet more noise issues into the room, but still no signs of the door opening.

I am just about to give up when I notice a small bit of paper hidden under the key-pad, and pick it up, and see.

Is it a clue to the mysterious code?

You have a brilliant mind and since you don't seem to have pen and paper, you decide to mentally imagine writing down two lines of text, the alphabet and directly beneath it, the alphabet backwards. So, in your mind, underneath the A you write the Z, underneath the B you write the Y, underneath the C comes the X etc etc. You quickly realize BZNZSZ spells YAMAHA in this cypher. But how does that help you?

I think that since the keypad buttons emit different sounds, you need to find the sound or combination of sounds that mimic a Yamaha motorcycle.

Aha! The code is cracked.

Whist waiting for a solution I have deftly been manipulating the keys, but all I could manage was a superb rendition of "Stars and Stripes Forever", which by pressing more buttons had a full rhythm accompaniment.

YAMAHA -- Hang on they also produce musical instruments. The horrible thought hits me. I have wasted valuable time trying to open the door using an electronic key-board. Rats! (Ooops I don't want to open that thread again)

I think the sky-light will have to be the answer somehow.

Hi Gordon- sorry to cause any domestic problems - can we recap a little as I'm not sure what is in your invantory now. I can only suggest you take a closer look at your ladder as it may have a very small button that will extend it.

I'm also thinking of clicking on the Inventory to see what is left. Are the 2 empty buckets still there, so could they be used to raise the ladder those missing 6 inches? Kind of a dicey foothold, I know.

As long as the buckets don't slide. Is the floor slick? We don't want Gordon falling on his tush.

Since the rat is your friend (he wouldn't have been mine since I would have frozen his tail for a lockpick back in the kitchen ), maybe you should check and see what sorts of impressions he can do? Maybe munching on one of the buckets will fool the audio lock.

So what's left. Time to revisit the old backpack, as my memory is not what it was, and its a long long way to travel back through this thread for a check.

Two empty buckets, oil lamp, matches, 3 large rocks, 20 foot ladder, metal lever, a spade, kitchen knife, ball of twine, cooking oil, large plastic bag and sack of rotten pototoes.

The rat can no longer help, as he/she (I didn't know him/her THAT well!) is on the wrong side of the kitchen door.

The only way is up!

Working with the advice from sierramindy and flutist I place a large rock under each of two up turned buckets to attempt to stop them sliding. I then place the ladder on top of the buckets. It now reaches the sky-light!

Use the cooking oil on the hinge to un-"stuuuck" it.

OK, the cooking oil worked and the hinge finally moved and a hard push opened the rest of the skylight. Climbing up and out took a bit of doing but got past that action sequence and now what is there to see?

Whoa! slow down. I'm still out of breath from climbing the ladder.

Let's try the cooking oil on the hinge etc. etc.

I climb out onto the roof of the building, and pull up the ladder after me. This knocks over the buckets below, so no route back that way.

The roof is bare, nothing to pick up or use here.

I walk to the edge. A sheer drop of 200 feet on all sides to the earth below. The outer walls are plain, no footholds, no ledges, zilch!

A strange oval shaped room extends out over the abyss from one side of the roof.

I enter. It appears to be an office of some kind, but I explore and there is nothing in here of any use to me whatsover. I am just about to leave when I see something in the corner.

I investigate and find a large tumbleweed.

I leave the office, no salvation there. I must escape with my wits alone (God help me!)

My backpack must hold the answer.

It contains.

A 20 foot ladder, 14 pounds of rotten pototoes, a spade, a metal lever, a large plastic bag, a ball of twine, an oil lamp, matches, one large rock, and a kitchen knife.

This ones a teaser!

Hmmm, thinking going on here ... oval room, tumbleweed, punch line ... aha! Can't say more, can I? Don't want to be bleeped.
Back to the drawing board, I mean backpack, as I was trying to think of something to do with the tumbleweed, like set it afire for a signal that might be seen by the traffic chopper with the lookouts who monitor highway traffic jams.
That's out so Plan B is to check if there are any buildings nearby that can be reached by using the ladder as a bridge?

Gordon, does the ladder extend? Some ladders do ya know.

How long is this ball of twine - are we looking at absailing down the cliff?
Edit 2nd idea can we boil up the rotten potatoes to produce a gas to fill the large plastic bag, which we secure with twine to make a ballon to float down like Winne the Pooh?

Hmmm! A bit to catch up on.

I search the horizon, but there is nothing for the eye to see. (I said my graphics don't run to much!)

The ladder will not extend to reach anything, and in any case there's nothing there but the earth below.

The twine looks a bit frayed to abseil with, and looking around there is nothing to tie the end to up here.

I don't want to go near the potatoes! They smell disgusting already without heating them up.

The parachute idea would be interesting. However there is a strong swirling wind blowing around the building and I think it would probably blow my back into the walls after I jumped off.

We need to think of another form of transport from the roof that I can have more control of.

Can we make a primitive glider from the plastic, iron lever, spade and twine. and can we leave the potatoes behind as I think they may be a health hazard and the fumes might be distorting your facilties

I'm spinning a fairy tale here for amusement (amazement?) only.
Without going near the potatoes since they are in such bad shape, use the ladder to push the potatoes over the side. They land with a thud and a squish. Remember the exotic plants? Well, there is a magic, very exotic seed among the mashed potatoes which sprouts and grows and grows. Up, up, and away! Now there is a magic beanstalk that stretches way up into the sky and a choice to be made. Go up to maybe a magic kingdom, who knows, or down to an empty stretch of land and walk and walk ... where?
