Mine is the Game of the Year edition and did come with a small manual and a large map. Game controls are listed on the back, also in your options menu on the main menu of your game. W- forward E- Jump R- ready Magic T- rest (also change time of day by resting) A- strafe left S- back D- strafe right F- ready weapon Tab-toggle view (hold down to viewe character with mouse Caps lock -toggle run shift- run Ctrl - sneak Space bar - activate/use (like to open doors, talk) F5 - quick save F9 - quick load F1 - quick menu J - Journal Quick keys to use with F1 1-9 Left mouse - to fight R Mouse - menus (character, map, magic) Q - to walk/run without holding down W, very handy when I have a long jaunt I use mostly, W, Tab, T, R, F, spacebar, Caps lock, shift and of course the mouse
There are some others for scrolling through spells which so far I haven't used.
I find it much easier with a keypad, though the keyboard I have now has an attached gamepad that looks alot like the snipa. It is slanted to the right so fits your hand nicely, the spacebar is in the Rhand corner and is easier reached with your thumb while your fingers can remain of the keys. The snipa is the same and I only switched as I had to have snipa, keyboard and mouse all on the same sliding tray and it was very crowded.

Maggie, you can go into the controls and assign whichever key you want to the different functions.
With my Cyber Snypa I've stuck with most of the defaults like Hawka has. But I pretty much only use the W for moving and the mouse for direction. As an example, I have my R set to Rest and T is my Journal. I do keep my keyboard close as I do use the Caps Lock for Run also. I could assign another key, but have been too lazy to do it! So you can set the keys to your personal preference. It only took me about a half hour to get used to it and love it.
I think you will really like the gamepad. Once you get used to it, it becomes an extension of your hand! What I like is that it is good for either the left or right hand.

Maggie there is a good one on UHS Hints, so you won't have to go through the whole thing Morrowind hints plus there are tons online, used to have them in my favorites but lost in the crash. Check GameBanshee, or just google and you will have tons.

Hi Rowan Thanks !! My "grand plan" is to complete every possible quest from every possible quest giver that I possibly can Cheers. Mad You'll be playing for about a year, then. I once spent eight months on and off searching for every last ruin and temple and cave, long after I had completed everything I waned to finish in the game, including the expansions. It was fun, but I was awfully powerful and the combat got silly. I don;t know if I actually found everything, but I did my best.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Maggie the service is only if you want to download the Hints to your computer, there is no charge to just look at them. Just go to the Morrowind link I posted and save it to your Favorites.
Don't worry about the controls too much, when you are playing the game for awhile, they become pretty automatic. We will be here to help you out, you will be very weak in the beginning of the game and you will look it too.

hawka- help, help, you would not believe. I am in the beginning, have gotten my papers, I am outside and before I can go through another door I am to get a ring out of a barrel, but how do I bust the barrel open. I have all my numbers you gave me, it will not let me save, so I will start over when you can help. Boy I feel dumb with this, am ordering the game pad tonight. It will not let me through the door without the ring. Thanks maggie ________________________________________________________________ Can you tell me if I can play the game without the Construction Set put on from Morrowind? I had to take it off, it is giving my computer problems, the game is not, but I never used the disc, it just went on with the Morrowind Disc. Hope I am making sense.. maggie

Space will interact with objects and people, Mad. Every now and then I will still forget and left click to talk to someone and accidentally kill them with my Daedric Sword! But like Smiley says, go to the Options and see which key is assigned. The defualt is Spacebar.

You should be able to save anytime you want to, press esc for the main menu, then save, unless you have your in game character menu option. You also get to name the saves, using F5quick save you don't.
Draclvr I still forget that too, I just whacked someone I wanted to talk to and had to go back to a save, groan!!!! Too bad that there isn't a "sorry" key.

Perfect spelling, Smiley! I didn't install it either as it's not needed for the game.

Maggie, Morrowind is one of those games that lets you go anywhere you pretty much want, so you can start off along any path and find adventure. If you float your cross-hair (cursor) on the signs the name of the town will appear. Here is a site I direct folks to who start playing Morrowind. They offer a very good amount of information, but not too much... Morrowind Wiki

Maggie, once you have started the game, hit Esc and then click on Options. There are different things you can edit from there - Preferences, Audio, Controls and Video. The Controls tab is where you can change the keys that work best for you.

Hi Hagatha and Rowan I doubt very much I will manage every ruin, tomb and cave etc etc as they are not all related to quests and I have enough trouble locating the ones that are It was as many quests as I could manage that I was trying for .... And I can imagine it taking me a year just attempting those !! My most recent ploy is to try all the quests one person can give me and then when they say "come back when you're more proficient" or whatever - I go find another quest giver. I have been carefully avoiding the "code book" quest as I'm sure I read (or was told here at Gameboomers) that if I can reach a certain level, that particular quest will no longer be a requirement ?? And I've done very little of the main quest so becoming the Nevarine hasn't cropped up yet Anyway, I definitely have plenty of quests to go for as I am in so many Guilds and stuff Cheers. Mad

Mad, I wound't worry too much about the code book quest. There's so much to do in the game if you mess one thing up, you can just take another route.
I always like to tell first time Morrowind players about my own ineptitude the first time I played the game. I was playing along happily, gaining levels and joining guilds and doing quests and having an awfully good time, but I found the game a bit puzzling. I knew it was supposd to be a huge, free-wheeling game, open-ended and almost limitless exploration and all that. That was cool, I liked that. Yet the game semed to be lacking something. At around level 25 I finally got stuck on a quest, found a Morrowind forum, and started looking for help.
I was absolutely dumbstruck when I realized that the game had a main quest line and that I had completely missed it. Completely. Now that was before the first expansion came out, when the Journal was still an unholy mess, but even so...
Anyway the point is that while you can mess up the odd quest or even a guild, you can play the game almost indefinitely without having a clue what you're doing, and still finish it just fine and have a terrific time at it.

Maggie I don't know about the the game with just Morrowind, but just press J for Journal, whatever people told you to do should be in it. In the beginning you will get the take package to Cosades quest, which is part of the Main Quest. But remember to check out everything in Seyda Neen, you can loot the building you first arrive in, at least the places out of the people sight. Actually you can steal just about anything if you aren't seen. There is a trader right there in Seyda Neen that you can sell to. Talk to all the people, yes it is rather boring for now, but some of them might have something for you to do. I say might, but of course there will be tasks there. Anyway, you do have to start in Seyda Neen but from there wander to Balmora, hopefully you will see the guy falling from the sky, he has some useful stuff on him. Just get started and don't worry about being dumb, I was probably the dumbest there was. Or be like Mad, start the game, then start over when you sorta know what you are doing. I started mine over many times, didn't like my character, blah blah blah. This time I stuck with her, but later on found a cheat to change my face and hair cause I looked too masculine as in five o'clock shadow. I have this nifty green armor, like Mad has, but I still wear my skirt so I look feminine. We are here to help, the newbies like me, Mad and Draclvr and all the ones that have played it over and over. It is really an enjoyable game once you get into it, then you won't want to stop.
