What happens when you just press and not hod down the space bar. (I don't remember doing that). Also do you see a save and save as at any part of the preference screen?
------- I saw this in a review:
A combined inventory and preferences menu is accessible with the spacebar, and provides full control over transitions, graphics, saved games and other customizations...
Unfortunately, this screen must be brought up each time an inventory item is stored or retrieved.
To store an object, its cursor must be clicked on a particular spot in this menu screen. .....

Garfield, When you bring up the Preferences screen, the inventory is at the bottom. The backpack is over on the far left bottom of the screen, in the corner. It looks like a folded over pouch and it's easy to overlook. Have the item you want to store on your cursor and click it once on the backpack. Then I believe you'll see the item in one of the inventory squares. Hope this helps. Jema

GarfieldOdi, Left click on what you want to pick up, if you see it hanging from your hand on the screen, then hit spacebar to bring up preferences, you should still see the item hanging from your hand, then drag over to the bag, drop it in. It's a drop and drag, system. I hope this makes sense to you. This is for inventory. For save see save as (you name and save) or just save, in perferences. If you just save when you start game, it should just bring up where you left off. Rots saves tricky to find, I made a folder. My favorite game. Charllotte

GarfieldOdi, Your cursor has to change to a hand (actually a fist, like grabbing) before you can pick it up. It's a great game I have it installed on three computers. Charllotte

GarfieldOli, If I remember and my notes are right. If you are in the hidden corridor facing the Astrological false door turn right, go forward to the end, turn right, go forward to end (should pass some doors)turn right to the large Cobra, then to the Kings Chamber. If this doesn't work I will try to replay and talk you through, or somewhere, I might have and old Jeff Tober guide. Charllotte
