A minor question here, from a 'gamer's' view while playing; which is better, first person or 3rd person POV during a game?

BubbaJake,

It might be best to start a new thread on this topic. I'll move you off this thread.

I enjoy both first and third person viewpoints. I think it depends on the game as much as on the gamer.

Prefer 1st person, as feel that it's me who's doing the exploring and not the character. On the other hand 3rd person is better if motion sickness is a problem and the camera speed can't be slowed down. sick
My favourites where the Myst series (not Uru) and recently Scratches and the Sherlock Holmes's thumbsup

Let's hear it for the third person viewpoint! Only way to go as far as I'm concerned. I like the company of the third person being there rather than wandering around all by my lonesome. I'm not that interested in locations themselves, but rather the actions going on with what is happening in the adventure. Then again, I'm not into spooky stuff so having something suddenly jump out at me is boring, not entertaining. I think maybe the scary element is necessary in many first person games to make up for the fact that the rooms are empty. Creepy sounds make for some tension in a scene where nothing is actually going on. Just one point of view among hundreds (maybe thousands?) of gamers.

To love is to be happy with!

What's better for me, hmmm? We've sure 'chewed' on that one a lot around here! woozy Well, I'm in the '1st-person' camp. However, there's some good news that you may recall... (that Carla brought us about Frogwares' upcoming game, "Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper"): Frogwares will give players a 1st/3rd person choice at the beginning of the game. Neat, huh? Especially if more games are made this way.

Must be first person for me. That way I really feel like I'm in the game, looking at everything with my own eyes. I'll play some 3rd person games, but I always feel like I'm looking in from the outside, not immersive in the least.

It depends on the game.
Playing Myst or Obsidian with an avatar would make no sense.
Playing The Longest Journey without April wouldn't make any sense.

I think I can suspend belief better and get into the game when its third person perspective ala a good movie - with first person I tend to realize that no, I wouldn't go there, or I wouldn't do what the game wants me to do. That said, of the three games I enjoyed most this year, two of them were first person perspective, Outcry and Rhiannon.

I really enjoy the third person games the most. Even games as beautiful as Riven or Myst were not enjoyable to me because of the first person style. I think it is just personal opinion because there are just as many people who love the first person games. :christmas:

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

I don't really care. For me there are more important things I look at. Like poor controls, stories, and puzzles that don't fit into the story or seem to be added just to waist time.

What about games that switch between the two, start in 3rd and as actions begins go to first person? I do like prowling around, especially in really interesting locations and in scary games. About Jack the Ripper, after seeing photos of the actual victims it's hard to get into a game concerning that subject. I did like 'Ripper', though.

I prefer third person. I don't feel more immersed in first person, just the opposite. I'm supposed to be playing a character not myself and I can't identify with a character I can't see.

Currently Playing:
Adventure Game: Broken Age
Darkside: Star Wars: The Old Republic

There's nothing that turns me off a new game more than when I see screenshots with my right hand and weapon in the bottom right quarter of the screen.

If it's first person, I want the clean view of Myst (et. al.) and no weapons in sight.

Same with me, Butcher. In a shooter it's way more important for 1st person POV, and it does give a realistic adrenalin rush.

I think I have a leg in both camps, like Jenny100, although when playing any darkside games, its definitely first person.
