I have been unable to keep Max from drowing beneath the Hermitage. I checked the walkthrough which says I should use the rock to block the door open but I can't get Max to do this. He just says he doesn't need that. Anyone remember how to do this correctly?

The door that needs to be left open is the door at the top; right when you entered this secret room - before you went down the metal ladder.
You click the rock on the door and he will place it.

Max will always fall in the water while chasing the monk. That is part of the story. He will be saved later.

I am now at the Militia questioning the guard. He wants to draw the tatoo on the monk but I have no paper or pen. Did I miss it somewhere? I can't leave the room without leaving the building.....

I'm trying to recall - is there a notebook at bottom left of your screen? If so, you should be able to pick it up and click it on the guard.

There is a booklike item at the corner of the table but I can't pick it up or do anyting with it--I have both left and right clicked on it....

Can you click-hold and drop it on the guard?

Back at Auntie's house - Open the curtain above the refrigerator and take the plugged spray paint can. Go to the bed. Take the notebook (and pen) from shelf above the bed.
